After meeting in prison in the wake of a botched grave robbery, two strangers from different echelons of English society -- scheming lowlife William Plunkett (Robert Carlyle) and gentleman-debtor Capt. James Macleane (Jonny Lee Miller) -- decide to join forces. The two become highwaymen and set out to steal their way to a life of leisure. But, as their infamy increases, Macleane falls for the beautiful Lady Rebecca (Liv Tyler), and begins to wonder if he should go straight.

Here is a film overgrown with so many directorial flourishes that the heroes need machetes to hack their way to within view of the audience. It's not enough to want to make a movie. You have to know why, and let the audience in on your thinking. Go to Full Review

There are some spirited moments, but this is mostly a chaotic jumble of style over substance. Go to Full Review

A rollicking time at the movies, if not exactly enlightening. Go to Full Review

Mar 8 Really enjoyed this when it first came out and it's still a fantastic yarn today 25 years on. Not sure how this has such a small tomato score because it's a gem of a film. It's Robby Carlisle and Jonny Lee Miller at their best, Ken Stott and Michael Gambon doing what they do so well. Liv Tyler is superb in amongst the creme of British Comedy of the 1990s. Want Alexander Armstrong... he's here; Matt Lucas? Yup him too. I cannot for the life of me fathom how only one in four critics gave this the nod as it's a bloody great riot of fun. See more David L 11/29/2024 Under appreciated gem of a movie. Very entertaining from start to finish. Well acted and directed. See more Maria A 06/30/2024 I don't understand why this film doesn't have a higher rating. It's not for the faint-hearted, sure, but the story is captivating, the cast is superbe, and the cinematography and the music punctuate the story in a way that's beautiful as it is haunting. I would highly recommend it if you want a film that's a bit different, but an exciting watch nonetheless. See more 08/27/2020 This is an issue of style over substance. Only it's not all THAT cool to look at... It's a costume drama/adventure made for the MTV generation. So it tries a little too hard to be cool, but doesn't succeed most of the time... See more 01/31/2020 Basically unwatchable. Filmed like a low budget pop video. I only watched the first 15 minutes and then decided my life was too valuable to waste any more time watching the equivalent of a 1st year undergraduate film project that maybe scraped a low 2nd. The only virtue of this film is an undeserved soundtrack by Craig Armstrong that has been frequently re-used on TV shows, in particular Top Gear. See more 10/14/2019 While I will admit the movie has its faults, mostly a confusing start that is also visibly confusing (and too dark to see at times) it is much better than the score on here would have people believe. It is one of my favorites of all time as the characters & the charm which they are acted makes up for most of the shortcomings. See more Read all reviews
