Ben Sachs Chicago Reader The film's good cheer goes a long way. Apr 13, 2020 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader The press notes call it "a crowd-pleaser at the Sundance Film Festival," but don't expect this Pop Aye to be "strong to the finnich." Rated: 2/5 Jul 28, 2017 Full Review Christopher Kompanek Washington Post As Thana, Warakulnukroh radiates a sense of unadorned humanity, coupling a sense of being lost with the desire to be of service. Rated: 3/4 Jul 20, 2017 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema 'Pop Aye' is writer/director Kristen Tan's debut feature, and it is a strong one with a distinct sense of place. Rated: 3.5/5 May 1, 2021 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension Despite its idiosyncrasies, Pop Aye is ultimately a boy-and-his-dog story in search of a catharsis that, frankly, you will see coming by the halfway point. Still, it's executed with a distinction and grace that cause it stand out from the pack. Dec 12, 2020 Full Review Leigh Monson Substream Magazine Pop Aye is an intriguing bit of South Asian cinema, exploring a universal feeling of growing older and communicating great messages about how to cope with the feelings that advancing age and mortality inspires. jessnodarse it's popeye not pop aye Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is fantastic! Then look back The Elephant Crisis in Thailand.... What can we do to save them ? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Pop Aye tells the story of a chance encounter, a disenchanted architect bumps into his long-lost elephant on the streets of Bangkok. Excited, he takes his elephant on a journey across Thailand, in search of the farm where they grew up together. Overall, Pop Aye is a wonderful first-feature debut for Kirsten Tan. Pop Aye is such a heart-warming documentary about a man and his elephant. It's a documentary that is very unlikely, and incredible to see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I have to admit; I was surprised at how good this is, especially when compared to the trailer. This is now probably my favourite film by a Singaporean director. It's lovely, graceful, layered, very funny, and at times deeply moving. A real breath of fresh air. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member This quirky offering substitutes slick production with authentic performances by amateur actors and a uniquely Thai style. While the dreamlike presentation of brief and fleeting moments of intensity may not resonate with all viewers, it is the perfect metaphor for the ruthless development of a western landscape in southeast Asia.
