It's no less schematic than it sounds, but solid performances and straightforward handling make Bergman's fourth feature the most fully achieved, though hardly most characteristic, of his fledgling film career to that point. Go to Full Review

Sometimes the tone is a bit hieratic. At best, it is a lukewarm romantic drama from the Swedish director. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Berit is the first really terrifically interesting character in Ingmar Bergman's cinema, and Nine-Christine Jönsson is giving the first truly surprising performance. Go to Full Review

A film full of stylish grimaces and embryonic Bergmanisms, for stout-hearted students in search, of something besides entertainment. Go to Full Review

It's a bleak world of hard-faced dock workers and stringy authority figures, where adults are no longer interested in romance or books and even a night out at the movies is just a prelude to a street brawl. Go to Full Review

isla s 09/02/2022 I liked this film as the main character, Berit, is someone I felt both sympathy and respect for. Its a fairly grim watch but it has some reasonably good bits of dialogue and its thoughtful, in that it has a morality aspect to it too. There are some nice pieces of camerawork and I'd recommend it. See more 09/26/2014 An intriguing early work by Bergman, which shows an interesting feminist bent for the time, as it involves friendships between delinquent women and illegal abortions. Recommended in showing his development as a scriptwriter and director, and for showing early members of his acting troupe. See more 12/16/2012 Quite clearly the work of a filmmaker still looking for his own original style. Though the adult themes are interesting, this is not among Ingmar Bergman's defining works and is full of many little imperfection, like the naive ending. See more 11/25/2012 Visually quite nice, some interesting details (dancing scene), however ..underdeveloped characters, the storyline didn't compensate it. See more 03/03/2012 this was really 3/4 of a great film. i was interested in the characters and the visuals were great as this was the first collaboration between bergman and gunnar, but the end lost focus a bit. overall a realist human drama worthy of viewing. See more 08/27/2011 Perhaps what distinguishes Bergman from his peer is that he knows how to visualize his script into the screen. He's a wizard of words, a visionary of literacy. If the film's look falls flat, his script never is. This film is one of his earliest works, but it contains his would-be signature for the rest of his career. See more Read all reviews
