This autobiographical film tells the story of director Manoel de Oliveira's youth in his beloved Oporto, Portugal. Oliveira reconstructs his childhood experience of the city by employing a collage method, using segments from historic films, period music and old photos to piece together an Oporto that is long gone. The film also plays out events from the director's childhood, including young Manoel (Jorge Trêpa) in his family's bakery, at the opera and marveling at his first love.
