Mark Jenkins NPR If the movie's tone is a little sappy, that's hardly inappropriate. Sorrow and resilience are the common bond of the major characters. Mar 16, 2012 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times If making a decent movie required only good intentions, then "Pray for Japan" would be off and running. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 16, 2012 Full Review Ernest Hardy Village Voice Filmed over a period of six weeks and supplemented with animated music sequences and chilling news footage of the terrifying deluge, Pray is both an elegy and a love letter. Audience Member Beyond the blockbuster shots of the waves pounding Tohoku, was a more enduring story of recovery. Here it is documented and shows the uniquely patient way of the Japanese to endure suffering and try to persevere. Very standard documentary and not much high end production but does a neat enough job. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Everyone can learn from this - absolutely. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member wasted opportunity. Levy had the chance to tell the world about the entire disaster that is affecting our planet and totally failed. He only put the Fukushima incident in one line of a slide of events and focused solely on one town and the tsunami. Even more annoying was the seemingly propped up message of coming together that was beaten to death with a horrific soundtrack.. its a pass... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member everyone must see it................ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member What an awful propeganda film. Like NY times said good intentions dont make good movie. Movie was only about the positive side and did not represent our disaster or do any justice to our history. It seems Mr Levy was trying to make a name for himself off our tragedy and reviews are showing it did not work. This movie did nothing to help disaster but donation. Did not help anyone to understand the reality and totally left out the nuclear disaster that we have to live with. If the money did not go to Charity, I would ask for a refund. It is total trash that hijacked a phrase last year. Mr levy said he was moved by the passion of people of Tohoku however he started to fundraiser only a couple of days after the earthquake, meaning he did not see what he claimed in his initial fundraiser, because there was no rebuilding the first week. We had nuclear disaster that entire Week and Mr Levy ignored that aspect. This film is a total failure that will ends up on 99 cent rack or 100yen shop if its lucky. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member An emotional, intimate look at the effects of the devastating earthquake in Japan last year.
