Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Everything about this effort, including its hackneyed, overfamiliar title, smacks of laziness and a cynical indifference to its lack of originality. Sep 25, 2019 Full Review Amelia Harvey Frame Rated Prey might've been forgivable if it dived headfirst into its sense of ridiculousness, but it's ultimately too boring to even be so-bad-it's-good. Rated: 1/5 Nov 8, 2019 Full Review Sara Clements Daily Dead Despite the suspenseful premise, Prey turns in one of Blumhouse's weaker productions, which all comes down to unoriginality and an underdeveloped backstory. Rated: 2/5 Nov 5, 2019 Full Review Dominic Griffin Spectrum Culture The Blumhouse brand has proven to provide entertaining little projects, even when working with little to no budget, but Prey makes even their lowest achieving fare feel like A24's awards season bait. Rated: 1/5 Oct 6, 2019 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media From the start, this ridiculous horror-suspense movie is fraught with nonsense and a head-scratching lack of logic; though it eventually goes crazily over the top, it's too late to care. Rated: 2/5 Sep 28, 2019 Full Review Joey Keogh Wicked Horror This is the kind of movie that seems to lay out exactly what it is right away before zigzagging all over the place entertainingly. Lawrence C A dumb premise that leads to bloodless series of embarrassingly bad non-events. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Mr P Hey, it's not great. But it has its moments, a decent twist and some edgy bits. Its better than it's ratings by double maybe. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/31/24 Full Review Reinhard W It has lots of lenghts… which get your concentration go down to zero. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review DD I don't think I've ever been more angry at the movie premise within the first ten minutes in my life. Traumatized teen gets sent to "heal" in what is obviously a Dr. Phil-esque program meant to help "troubled" youths straighten up and fly right - so what the hell is a poor kid with PTSD after his father is murdered doing there? Being further traumatized, of course. This is the most wildly idiotic, irresponsible youth rehabilitation program I've ever even heard of conceptually - they leave the kids alone on an uninhabited island for three days with a flint fire starter, plastic tarp, Swiss army knife, and backpack with what looks like one lunch in it and a liter water bottle. And no first aid kit. Not all of the kids together without supervision; each of them alone on their own island. For three days. Alone. With food and water for one meal. No radio or sat phone in case of emergencies, because the small sailboat they all arrived on (and barely fit on) will be patrolling the area and monitoring to make sure the kids are okay - just a single flair "to signal passing ships" in case of emergency. That's what the lone counselor tells them. TO SIGNAL PASSING SHIPS. Is this the horror of the movie? The absolutely insane level of stupidity of the adult characters? Who wrote this? Who approved this? This is sub-Asylum level writing, not something I'd expect from Blumhouse. It doesn't get any better, either. Random teen girl on this uninhabited tropical island who isn't suffering any sort of malnutrition or other physical ailments, despite it being hinted in the opening credits she's been there since childhood; sure, makes perfect sense. Does our protagonist beg to be taken to the adults that are surely nearby? Nope. Does she explain her situation in any meaningful way? Nope. Of course not; humans don't actually communicate with eachother. Especially when one is warning the other that there's someone else on the island that will absolutely kill them if they're seen. "I'll see you tomorrow!" After a twist you can see coming a mile away, the last 20 minutes tries valiantly to be interesting and engaging, with people suddenly speaking clearly and making rational decisions, but I can't forgive all the stupid that led up to it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review IrateTyrant C Solid survival horror, better than crawling through THE DESCENT I loved this movie. It was mechanically sound and followed a tight-lined script. While many others gush over the "Predator" rehash with the same title, I found that this movie had way more to offer. In fact, I would say that this movie is a cross between "Prey" 2022 and "Primal Rage" and adds a little "Cast Away," where the main character instead is a teenage guy who is chased by monsters across a Philippine island (maybe it's Philippine.) The survival antics were fun and interesting, versus the dumb pranks they play on Predator in the 2022 film which were forced and seemed like rehashes in their own rite of The Neverending Story. The banter here between the MC and himself in his hallucinatory state in the beginning of the film were better than Tom Hanks and the Wilson volleyball, to me. I gasped when he threw his knife in a teenage-rage. The ending was kind of interesting, and definitely had a few catches to the script, even though they were a little too easy to forecast. Good flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review Audience Member No story line, rubbish and pointless ending. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
