While yes, it doesn’t have the exact magic that it had on Broadway, this movie preserves these performances by Lane, Broderick, Beach, and Bart from the original production and brings in Will Farrell (who is great) and Uma Thurman (weakest of the cast by far). The movie is great but lacks the creativity of other brooks films in style

Broderick is gold in this, and Lane is amazing as always. Of course, the original Broadway production is best, but this is a great updated outing with more modern faces. Why people drag it so hard, I'll never know.
