Failing producer Max Bialystock (Nathan Lane) and his accountant, Leo Bloom (Matthew Broderick), scam a group of elderly women out of their nest eggs by convincing them to invest in a horrendously offensive Third Reich-themed musical secretly intended to bomb the moment it opens. But when high-brow Broadway audiences mistakenly assume Springtime for Hitler is a satire, Bialystock finds himself with the critical acclaim that has long eluded him -- and the biggest hit of his career.

Critics Consensus

Despite the rich source material, The Producers has a stale, stagy feel more suited to the theater than the big screen.

This is extraneous for anyone who's seen the original film or show, presumably leaving everyone else to wonder what all the fuss has been about. Go to Full Review

Not so much a film as an awkwardly framed souvenir of the Broadway hit musical, The Producers needs a live audience like a candle needs oxygen. Go to Full Review

Where Rent and Chicago were liberated from the confines of the stage with spectacular results, director Susan Stroman takes the Nathan Lane-Matthew Broderick smash and films it as if it were playing to the balcony. Go to Full Review

Daniel G. @TheProducer25 Aug 1 While yes, it doesn’t have the exact magic that it had on Broadway, this movie preserves these performances by Lane, Broderick, Beach, and Bart from the original production and brings in Will Farrell (who is great) and Uma Thurman (weakest of the cast by far). The movie is great but lacks the creativity of other brooks films in style See more Sarah E Jun 18 Broderick is gold in this, and Lane is amazing as always. Of course, the original Broadway production is best, but this is a great updated outing with more modern faces. Why people drag it so hard, I'll never know. See more Ed L Dec 30 Hilarious! I tried the original film, and it was nowhere near as good. I guess it depends on which version you see first. Very entertaining. See more Liam D 11/27/2024 Very disappointed I didn’t get to see will farrel as Hitler See more 06/21/2024 As good as the original. And it has new songs.
