Critics Consensus

Fueled by character development and setting instead of special effects, Prospect is a sci-fi story whose style is defined - and enriched -- by its limitations.

The defiantly lo-fi "Prospect" is a smartly entertaining throwback that doesn't need a Marvel movie's worth of CGI to make its point. Go to Full Review
Noel Murray Los Angeles Times 11/05/2018
The film balances genre thrills with a detailed depiction of prospecting on an alien world, created via a mix of practical locations (shot in a damp Northwestern forest) and some psychedelic digital backdrops. Go to Full Review

It's rare to see a sci-fi movie that genuinely has a true grit to it, a characteristic that bolsters its screenplay through its more underwhelming passages. Go to Full Review

Watch 2018's Prospect for the story, of course, but also for the impeccable aesthetic. Go to Full Review
Miles Surrey The Ringer 02/10/2023
Prospect is largely indebted to old-school westerns—the lawless pursuit of these gems is akin to an interstellar gold rush—and Pascal’s character fits into the equation as the charming gunslinger archetype. Go to Full Review

3.5/4
The small details throughout Prospect, which have obviously been thought through and labored over, do much to immerse the viewer in the intense situations. Go to Full Review

DAVID W Nov 3 This is sort of grunge sci-fi. Dirty, messy full of slime and shite. The specials are well done and the cinematography is very good. Then there are the characters - and do we believe them or identify in some way with them? and I suppose so by the end of the film. Spoiler alert - the teenage girl who forges a bond through adversity with the man who killed her father? That’s the main premise but you have to suspend disbelief a fair bit. Pedro Pascal is an actor I’ve not come across before but he did a pretty good job. See more Simon R Sep 28 British low-budget film making at its best. If you liked Moon, or any other intelligent Sci-Fi that doesn't rely upon lots of SFX and fight scenes, then this is for you. Good acting and good immersion. See more Steve C Sep 26 Pretty good for a budget film. The world building could have been better; some of it made no sense. See more Richard W @rdwoolf Aug 28 Simple. But interesting & entertaining. See more Slava C Aug 25 OK-ish low budget sci-fi. Actually, looks like a casting for The Last Of Us. The same story -- Pedro Pascal, a girl that is not his daughter, building relationships, post-apocalyptic world (an other planet, but whatsoever), etc. See more Chicken M Aug 12 Id like it if Pedro wasn't init See more Read all reviews
