What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fueled by character development and setting instead of special effects, Prospect is a sci-fi story whose style is defined - and enriched -- by its limitations.

Cary Darling Houston Chronicle The defiantly lo-fi "Prospect" is a smartly entertaining throwback that doesn't need a Marvel movie's worth of CGI to make its point. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 9, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The film balances genre thrills with a detailed depiction of prospecting on an alien world, created via a mix of practical locations (shot in a damp Northwestern forest) and some psychedelic digital backdrops. Nov 5, 2018 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com It's rare to see a sci-fi movie that genuinely has a true grit to it, a characteristic that bolsters its screenplay through its more underwhelming passages. Rated: 3/4 Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Monisha Ravisetti CNET Watch 2018's Prospect for the story, of course, but also for the impeccable aesthetic. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Miles Surrey The Ringer Prospect is largely indebted to old-school westerns—the lawless pursuit of these gems is akin to an interstellar gold rush—and Pascal’s character fits into the equation as the charming gunslinger archetype. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The small details throughout Prospect, which have obviously been thought through and labored over, do much to immerse the viewer in the intense situations. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Excellent acting, compelling characters, and great production design elevate this masterpiece in science fiction filmmaking to cult-classic status. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Philip C As soon as she DOESN'T kill her father's killer, the movie is BS. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/15/25 Full Review Audience Member Loved Prospect. Low budget, but a better story than most. Made me think of some of the old SF magazines. An extraterrestrial environment composed primarily of terrestrial vegetation was disappointing at first, but I got around to accepting Olympic Peninsula rainforest as invasive plant species from Earth (like kudzu in the southeastern US). Pascal was great as a hardened but charismatic opportunist with a taste for florid language, and Thatcher (his complete opposite in all respects) powered through adolescent terror and uncertainty with a very convincing performance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Samitha B Ridiculous story-line and the dialogue from medieval times. This is like Shakespeare in spacesuits! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Rich H A decent effort, despite the basic storyline. Excellent acting and SFX. It made the most of a low-budget. I found the dialogue difficult to understand at times due to the in helmet sound recording. Had to use subtitles to keep up with the storyline. The quirky lingo delivered by one of the main characters was at times contrived. It felt like the writers were paying homage to Deadwood. Overall not a bad movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Mark B Well acted pretty limited story telling. Low budget limited world building but good character development that you get invested in. It is not action packed but at 95 minutes it works Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
