      Critics Consensus

Fueled by character development and setting instead of special effects, Prospect is a sci-fi story whose style is defined - and enriched -- by its limitations.

Marshall P Yeah, great film. I really enjoyed it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Sauna T Great small-budget sci-fi flick. Really an overlooked and underrated piece, better than most bigger movies on recent years. I'd die to get some more of this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review Laurie K There's much to love about the aesthetics of this film, especially for any fan of sci-fi. It's easy to be sucked into the flipping of analog style switches, hand cranked cleaners, old-school air hoses and oxygen filters, and pew-pew lazer guns. There's mysterious flora that hisses and gurgles, and egg sacs filled with meat, acid, and valuable crystals. The well-written, flourished spoken script only adds to the intriguing directions this film ultimately takes. The ending is one big, beautiful smile. So much to enjoy here! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Pablo A This movie is awesome. I don't know what to tell you I had so much fun watching this. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the two leads make this a formidable ride. Highly recommended if you looking for something new and riveting. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review CK Movie Reviews Prospect is an incredibly slow-paced movie with insufficient tension to be truly entertaining. The characters lacked depth, and although the worldbuilding was praised by many, it felt somewhat flat. Furthermore, the ending left much to be desired, as it felt unresolved. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Jeffrey P Starts slow before showing grim prospects for the future. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Cary Darling Houston Chronicle The defiantly lo-fi "Prospect" is a smartly entertaining throwback that doesn't need a Marvel movie's worth of CGI to make its point. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 9, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The film balances genre thrills with a detailed depiction of prospecting on an alien world, created via a mix of practical locations (shot in a damp Northwestern forest) and some psychedelic digital backdrops. Nov 5, 2018 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com It's rare to see a sci-fi movie that genuinely has a true grit to it, a characteristic that bolsters its screenplay through its more underwhelming passages. Rated: 3/4 Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Monisha Ravisetti CNET Watch 2018's Prospect for the story, of course, but also for the impeccable aesthetic. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Miles Surrey The Ringer Prospect is largely indebted to old-school westerns—the lawless pursuit of these gems is akin to an interstellar gold rush—and Pascal’s character fits into the equation as the charming gunslinger archetype. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The small details throughout Prospect, which have obviously been thought through and labored over, do much to immerse the viewer in the intense situations.
