What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fueled by character development and setting instead of special effects, Prospect is a sci-fi story whose style is defined - and enriched -- by its limitations.

Cary Darling Houston Chronicle The defiantly lo-fi "Prospect" is a smartly entertaining throwback that doesn't need a Marvel movie's worth of CGI to make its point. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 9, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The film balances genre thrills with a detailed depiction of prospecting on an alien world, created via a mix of practical locations (shot in a damp Northwestern forest) and some psychedelic digital backdrops. Nov 5, 2018 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com It's rare to see a sci-fi movie that genuinely has a true grit to it, a characteristic that bolsters its screenplay through its more underwhelming passages. Rated: 3/4 Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Monisha Ravisetti CNET Watch 2018's Prospect for the story, of course, but also for the impeccable aesthetic. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Miles Surrey The Ringer Prospect is largely indebted to old-school westerns—the lawless pursuit of these gems is akin to an interstellar gold rush—and Pascal’s character fits into the equation as the charming gunslinger archetype. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The small details throughout Prospect, which have obviously been thought through and labored over, do much to immerse the viewer in the intense situations. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

AJ L It's been a couple times now I've tried to watch this (unintentionally repeated) and I remembered why I stopped watching the first time. Just too slow. Too little stakes. Cheap sci-fi loses the essence of the genre, which is cosmic scale. Cool cast tho Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Ryan M Interesting concept and excellently written, but still felt like there was something missing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Troy V We need more movies like this Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review P. H Interesting flick. Don't underestimate this film. Rather than write a detailed review for Prospect, there's a great "audience" review for this movie on Reddit with spoilers (r/TrueFilm). Type in "Prospect Reddit." Really puts everything you need to know in perspective. Couldn't have explained the movie any better myself. I recomend this film, but no distractions. You have to pay attention. One reviewer here even says Prospect had a bad ending. I didn't get that at all. As far as I'm concerned, it had a good ending. Definitely worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Spike D It's a fairly straightforward story, but its aesthetics and its worldbuilding are so sublime as to elevate it to something more than the mere sum of its story beats. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Zachary Jacob S Prospect is not a massive film. It feels pretty small scale, despite being an adventure on another planet. The film does have a rushed ending in my opinion. And at some points, feels a bit underdeveloped. However, I did like the characters, and how they progressed. The story was gripping. The acting was top notch. And the score was better than I expected! I'd say, the film isn't perfect, but definitely worth a watch. Especially if you enjoy gritty sci-fi.
