Critics Consensus

Fueled by character development and setting instead of special effects, Prospect is a sci-fi story whose style is defined - and enriched -- by its limitations.

Cary Darling Houston Chronicle The defiantly lo-fi "Prospect" is a smartly entertaining throwback that doesn't need a Marvel movie's worth of CGI to make its point. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 9, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The film balances genre thrills with a detailed depiction of prospecting on an alien world, created via a mix of practical locations (shot in a damp Northwestern forest) and some psychedelic digital backdrops. Nov 5, 2018 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com It's rare to see a sci-fi movie that genuinely has a true grit to it, a characteristic that bolsters its screenplay through its more underwhelming passages. Rated: 3/4 Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Monisha Ravisetti CNET Watch 2018's Prospect for the story, of course, but also for the impeccable aesthetic. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Miles Surrey The Ringer Prospect is largely indebted to old-school westerns—the lawless pursuit of these gems is akin to an interstellar gold rush—and Pascal’s character fits into the equation as the charming gunslinger archetype. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The small details throughout Prospect, which have obviously been thought through and labored over, do much to immerse the viewer in the intense situations. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Richard W Simple. But interesting & entertaining. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/28/25 Full Review Slava C OK-ish low budget sci-fi. Actually, looks like a casting for The Last Of Us. The same story -- Pedro Pascal, a girl that is not his daughter, building relationships, post-apocalyptic world (an other planet, but whatsoever), etc. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Chicken M Id like it if Pedro wasn't init Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Mirocko B Close to perfect. Must love sci-fi. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review jj m Without the over the top CGI and big budget, this movie was engaging, well written and well executed. The cast did a great job. A movie about human nature , survival and human dynamics. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Enrique S I am not a movie critic, and this is actually the first time I've taken the time to leave a review — simply because I genuinely enjoyed this film. Honestly, I wasn't expecting it to be this good. I found it really refreshing to see a sci-fi movie that avoids the usual, modern clichés. Instead of showing a super sleek, minimalistic future filled with thin glass screens (like everything was designed by Apple), Prospect builds a world that feels grounded in a kind of retro-futurism. The technology looks like it came straight out of the '70s or '80s — full of knobs, switches, and analog gear — and it just works so well. The story is both engaging and calm. I actually felt quite relaxed watching it, which is rare for this kind of movie. I'd love to find more films like this one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
