When troubled teen boy Stevie (Cameron Van Hoy) and his girlfriend, Rocky (Mischa Barton), attempt to rob a bank without any forethought, the situation rapidly deteriorates. Soon the young couple is holding bank customers and employees hostage, while law enforcement gathers outside. Daniel Bender (Burt Reynolds), a veteran negotiator for the FBI, is charged with assessing the crime scene and ending the standoff as quickly as possible, but Stevie's short fuse considerably complicates matters.

The crisp images and Bill Foster's unnerving ambient sound of hovering copters enormously aid this low-budget powder keg. Go to Full Review

Pups looks ragged and slammed-together, but that's part of its appeal; the film has a wildness that more care would have killed. Go to Full Review

If Stevie didn't seem like such a real and basically ordinary teen, the film wouldn't be so compelling. Go to Full Review

06/03/2020 That's a great movie that would definitely recommend it See more 07/25/2011 It's nice to see Mischa Barton flourish but this puppy version of a bank robbery is hardly a psycho thriller. The screaming was much, but there's Mischa! See more 02/17/2011 The most underrated movie of all time. See more 01/15/2011 watched it on the movie network a few times when it first came out. very intense movie See more 01/24/2010 Puppy Day Afternoon! Pretty intense. See more 07/22/2009 'Pups' is about very emotive subjects (gun crime and gun ownership in the US, the loss of innocence and nihilism of younger generations) that manages raise them without ever turning to didacticism. It is the sort of film Michael Moore wishes he had the intelligence to produce. It is political without wearing a badge on its sleeve, rather than spending the entire film hammering home an anti-gun message it treats us as adults. But that's not really what I wanted to talk about because the political message is of secondary importance. Foremost this film is a very very dark comedy that is playful with convention and whilst not perfect (it lacks pace at points, Rockie can be annoying) it is beautifully crafted and well worth anyone's time.
