      Critics Consensus

Puzzle transcends its quirky premise with honest emotion -- and Kelly Macdonald, whose nicely understated performance proves she's too often underutilized.

Kevin L Kelly McDonald is criminally underappreciated and under-employed. She's a fantastic actress. Irrfan Khan gives a fine performance as well in this smart, well-directed movie. 3.3 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review A.L.Jude P A treat to watch, but ended having a big hole in the script. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/23 Full Review Storm W Outstanding movie about life. No car chases. No computerization. No woke agenda. No nudity. No violence. Nothing gets blown up. The acting is superb, and the story is one most adults have witnessed...or been involved in. Where has this movie been hiding? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/18/23 Full Review Ma'Shy R they are good but you need to pit more on Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/23 Full Review isla s This is quite a, what I'd call, subtle film. Its a good drama, somewhat thoughtful. I liked that it offers an insight into the main characters perspective. I can imagine doing puzzles regularly is a good way to immerse yourself in another 'world' metaphorically speaking, if you find what you personally enjoy. I respect the main character, her determination to keep doing what she enjoys, regardless of her families opinions, once they learn about it - Good for her!. Its a pleasant and enjoyable watch, one I'd recommend, yes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review aynge m A really slow chick flick. The cover of the DVD made me think it was going to be a comedy, but nope. The performances were good, but it was really just too long for what it is. It's okay; will never watch it again, or recommend it to anybody. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

      J. R. Jones Chicago Reader In case you were wondering, the jigsaw puzzles are a metaphor for the wife's identity. Mar 20, 2020 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Always strong in supporting roles, Macdonald achieves her own mid-career breakthrough with a fascinatingly complex lead performance that pitches natural inhibition against a growing inner confidence. Rated: 4/5 Sep 18, 2018 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) What's to dislike here? Hardly anything - it's finding things actively to like that poses more of a problem. Rated: 2/5 Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This performance, arguably the best in Macdonald's career, is masterful and elevates the modest pleasures of the film. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2022 Full Review Fletcher Powell KMUW - Wichita Public Radio The movie takes a few shortcuts that make for some abrupt plot points, but it hardly matters given Macdonald's performance. Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Matt Cipolla Film Monthly Puzzle is a low-key crowdpleaser. Take it for what it is and enjoy. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 24, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
