Movie is cheap, but effective due to the inclusion of spooky alien set design and music, via Russian sci fi film footage, that producers managed to get their hands on.
But a silly ending ruins the mood.

You pretty much get what you deserve when you sit down to watch a ‘60s science fiction movie from American International – cheap effects, a silly story, unintentional laughs, and campy acting. In a nutshell, Planet of Blood is about a space mission to rescue an alien species who have crash landed on Mars. Much to the chagrin of all involved, it turns out that the only survivor of the crash happens to be some sort of blood-sucking fiend who puts a damper on the whole project. To its benefit, the last twenty minutes or so actually manage to build some suspense and it might be worth a peak to see Dennis Hopper and Basil Rathbone in secondary roles. On the downside, unless you enjoy spaceships taking off, landing, or simply flying through space, there's really not much to see here.

It's a long, drawn out script, that takes its good old time, to move a long, The first two acts are about the receiving of an alien message and how advanced we are in space travel, in the advance year, of the 1990's. The second act, is a rescue mission to Mars, because the alien ship on its way to earth, crashed on Mars, but was able to send an SOS message pod to Earth. Then comes another rescue ship, a smaller, baby ship (the Meteor), on nearby baby planet, called Phobos, because they needed satellites to locate the escape pod, from the crashed alien ship, that turned to out be all that time on Phobos, (I told you this was complicated). By the end of the rushed, "scary" third act, when they finally rescue the only alien survivor, (a straight, salivating, Grinch looking cougar), the pace of the movie starts to pick up speed, with most of the crew dying at an accelerating rate, (a terrifying combination of loss of blood and staring intensely), the concluding end with the greatest, anticlimactic death of a monster, in film history, from... Hemophilia. And let's not forget the, oh so terrifying, parting shot, of jiggly oversized caviar, on a a bed of green Jello. Yum!

Above-average, imaginative sci-fi horror on a low budget makes good use of material from the Soviet science fiction film Nebo Zovyot and inspired all those alien monster loose on the spaceship flicks (including Alien).

Bad sounds make Blobbo watch with sound off. Then bad sights make him turn off rest of picture.
