Critics Consensus

Rambo III finds its justice-dispensing hero far from the thoughtful drama that marked the franchise's beginning -- and just as far from quality action thriller entertainment.

Keith Uhlich UGO Engages the plight of the Mujahideen with a humanizing, doc-like approach (fascinating to witness, all these years later, when the ally/enemy tables have turned so drastically). Jun 14, 2008 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine Strays slightly from the formula and therefore loses some of its mindless fun credentials. Rated: 2/5 Jan 14, 2008 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Always at ground zero in the chaos is Rambo -- gloriously, inhumanly impervious to fear and danger -- whose character is inhabited by Stallone with messianic intensity. Kyle C By this point in the series, Rambo’s hair has evolved into a character of its own: longer, glossier, and somehow more dramatic with every sequel. Rambo III picks up with John living quietly in Thailand, a local legend trying to find peace until his old mentor Trautman shows up asking for “one last job.” This one surprised me. It’s way better than Rambo: First Blood Part II, with stronger pacing, solid sets, and a more grounded sense of adventure (well, as grounded as a movie with exploding arrows and horseback helicopter chases can be). There’s genuine texture to the Afghanistan setting and even a hint of cultural depth that the last movie completely skipped. Stallone’s take on Rambo here has some unexpected softness. He’s still the unstoppable killing machine, but you see flickers of humanity: his quiet respect for other cultures, his kindness toward children, his almost spiritual desire for solitude. My personal headcanon is that Rambo’s on the autism spectrum. It’s the only explanation for his hyperfocus, literal communication style, and total discomfort with normal social interactions. Watching it through that lens actually makes the character more interesting and sympathetic. The movie’s not without its nonsense. Trautman aggressively manipulates Rambo into fighting again, completely out of character for him. The villains make baffling military decisions and the final battle has a truly absurd number of tanks. But even when it’s ridiculous, it’s fun ridiculous. The helicopter explosion, the improvised gunpowder surgery, Rambo charging into battle on horseback with a Molotov cocktail—it all somehow works in that late-’80s, over-the-top action way. It’s far from highbrow cinema, but Rambo III finds a balance between carnage and character that Part II missed entirely. Not as haunting or thoughtful as the first film, but a solid rebound and proof there’s still some heart behind the muscle. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Raju S Its 2025 and this has aged like fine wine... No woman star roles trying to imitate Rambo coz we got Rambo himself with all muscle, blazing guns, mindless action, kicking communist ass left and right with amazing battle chopper scenes and explosions... Forget those wimps wearing underpants over their pants, here we got a true alpha male with his testosterone pumping 100%. Best enjoyed after switching your brain off with popcorn and friends. The scene with the horse was top teir Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
