Nick M Legitimately bad. This was filmed in 1915, but delayed by two years as they waited for Mascagni (the composer of Cavalleria Rusticana) to finish the score. (RT mistakenly lists its release date as 1920.) After watching the picture I was confused why such a renowned composer would put his name to something so second rate, but apparently he needed the money to take care of his ailing brothers. He is the only person in this tragedy I feel for. I really wanted to like it. It was the last of Nino Oxilia's films to be released before his untimely death in combat at the age of 28, and at its core contains a kernel of a compelling story. But by God, if any of the main actors had ever experienced a genuine emotion between the four of them you'd never know by watching their performances. There's enough ham on this set to drive down the price of prosciutto. Satan is so over the top he's laughable, and the actor who plays Tristano made me groan in his final scene with Lyda Borelli. I officially cannot stand her after this film. Per usual she doesn't emote so much as cycles through a series of jerky, uncomfortable poses, contorts her face into inhuman expressions, and nearly all of her moods are tinged with petulance. And the storytelling and editing were just sloppy. There were one or two gargantuan plot holes, the print I saw had horrendous stencil tinting, and at one point someone from the production team can be seen gesticulating wildly in a window's reflection. And how am I supposed to take her seriously when the 80-year-old version of her character is just the same young actress in a granny wig? I can't. I won't.
