Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News An effective little creeper for those who swoon over Gothic-looking fright flicks. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 21, 2022 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers The biggest issue though is the fact that Moseley is outright distracting as Poe. He’s a square peg and Hatton is trying to mash him into a round hole. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Sharai Bohannon Dread Central Raven’s Hollow never really believes in itself, which is frustrating for a viewer. It’s a waste of an okay idea and some cool gothic vibes. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 26, 2022 Full Review Joey Keogh Wicked Horror Without any prior understanding of Edgar Allan Poe's work, you might get less out of Raven’s Hollow on an intellectual basis, but the movie is an entertaining and spooky slice of supernatural horror in its own right, too. Oct 10, 2022 Full Review Marie Asner Phantom Tollbooth [Raven's Hollow] brings depth to the character of Edgar Allen Poe as a young man. Gabriel S Raven's Hollow is yet another attempt at giving Edgar Allan Poe some sort of an introductory backstory to how he became the prolific and eccentric writer he was, a miserable attempt unfortunately. While the overall premise had potential, the execution flopped on too many levels. The story follows cadet Edgar Allan Poe and his team when, on a training exercise, they stumble upon a gruesome murder scene. Surprisingly, they are able to get that one piece of information that leads them into the right track right away, and thus they are at Raven's Hollow, a secluded village where the community is clearly hiding something — like, literally everyone is so obvious… And then all goes downhill from here. From one absurd plot point to another, I had to check if I wasn't watching the Raw Director's Cut. Something with the editing of this film is off, the sequence of scenes follow a disorienting ordering, as if someone that wasn't part of the project had to piece together the film and had little but some unclear instructions. But, oh well, Christopher Hatton is the Director of this weirdpiece and his catalog is not impressive, except perhaps for his work in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he only directed 2 episodes. Raven's Hollow has good atmosphere, though. The mystery is engaging, for the most part, and although everyone has a planky vibe to their acting, I quite see this happening often with movies trying to depict the customs of the eighteen hundreds — maybe everyone had this planky vibe to their lives, the facade of civility hidden true nature. Much to our dislike, the ending is just absurd. A downwards spiral of nonsense and obviousness, uninspiring and quite funny to watch but for the wrong reasons. Raven's Hollow disappoints with too many mistakes, a weird editing, and a bad story overall. It had some potential, but this film is just not recommendable to anyone with some thought process. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Craig B Raven’s Hollow is certainly an intriguing movie. Pretty gloomy throughout with some creepy scenes, the movie moves along at a reasonable pace, spending enough time on character development while creating an ‘origin story’ for Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Raven’, featuring none other than the horror legend himself as the main character, a Union cadet. Helped by a solid cast, creepy visuals and an ever-darkening story, this is certainly a macabre movie to recommend to horror fans who like dark stories set in the 1800s. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Dallas H As a supernatural horror movie, I liked Raven's Hollow. However, trying to connect this movie to Edgar Allen Poe and his poem The Raven seems like a disingenuous attempt at storytelling. If they were to remove those paltry connections to literary history, I would have enjoyed the movie even more as a standalone story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Logan D In the early 1800s, Poe is a cadet at West Point and is honor bound to investigate the death of a man near Raven's Hollow. Lots of fan service here in nods to Poe works. It's an average film with two things elevating it: Kate Dickie, love her; a wonderfully designed creature. A gothic near-popcorn flick. A stronger lead would have been nice. Trivia: Poe did attend West Point but failed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/04/23 Full Review Les N I am not watching this sort of movie again.
