Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Decoin's depictions of sexual proclivities and the downside of addiction give the film a flinty, sobering quality many of its period American counterparts were never allowed to reach. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 11, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

paul d A very good film noir detective movie with a hard edge, a raw look into the seedy side of Paris. Lots of good characters in this film, and a Jean Gabin who holds the screen flawlessly. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Realizing films from the fifties tend to be much slower-paced than more modern ones, I still thought Razzia sur la Chnouf was too much of an informative local colour movie rather than a fast action movie about the drugs world in Paris during the fifties. The opening credits made as much clear (it explicitly mentions the moral lesson of the film). Apart from the occasional shootout and the surprising ending, it is very slow and predictable. We are probably supposed to assume people in the fifties knew nothing about the goings on in drug land, with the stereotypical bosses, the smoky nightclubs, the odd ways of hiding the dope and selling it on, the reprisals taken against those who do not stick to the rules, the gruesome and humiliating effects on those hooked on the stuff, etc., etc. Perhaps the general audience really did need to be informed about these things at that stage, but somehow I doubt it. Nothing wrong with the performances of Gabin, Ventura and the others, of course (is that a very young Marcel Bozzuffi in that bar, by the way?). And the director was quite creative in his use of light, darkness and shadows. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
