What to Know

Critics Consensus

Wrapped in slick packaging but wholly lacking in holiday magic, Red One is a ho-ho-hum action-adventure.

Peter Howell Toronto Star A joyless, testosterone-fuelled tempest that squanders a reported $250 million (U.S.) budget on a hailstorm of crummy CGI and a blizzard of bad vibes. Rated: 1/4 Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Peter Travers ABC News We all need a little Christmas now,but not this cynical cash grab faking it as holiday fun. The mind boggles that it cost $250 million to produce a big, bloated fiasco about Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans saving kidnapped Santa (J.K. Simmons). Bah, humbug Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com [While] I am as cynical about the current state of the human condition as anyone, Red One taps into something honest and hopeful. Right now, with all that’s going on in the real world, those aren’t emotional states of being I want to take for granted. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Cody Leach Cody Leach (YouTube) Red One represents a slew of issues with modern Hollywood blockbusters but still manages to be fun and creative enough to elicit some holiday cheer. Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2024 Full Review Linda and Al Lerner Movies and Shakers The kids will like all the action, but Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans fail to establish much chemistry in this sour holiday tale. As it turns out, J.K. Simmons gets a lucky break. He gets to sleep through most of this fantasy. J.P. Wait until you can stream it for free. Nothing special about a weight lifting Santa Clause movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review sally I Fun, give me the Christmas spirit Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Maria G Fun movie. Didn’t need the bad language . Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review SLD53 It was so much fun, my kids and I loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Cathryn Funny, Happy Movie, Lovely Christmas Santa Idea, Not a lot of cussing, love the idea of how Santa get through all those chimneys magical Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Brad B Bottom line, I'm glad I saw this on my own first without taking my kids. On the plus side, Red One strikes me as a genuinely original, creative addition to an otherwise staid Christmas- or holiday-themed movie universe. Those who enjoy Dwayne Johnson's muscular approach to acting, like me (I'm using 'muscular' literally and figuratively), a la The Tooth, will also find similar, and familiar, satisfaction. On the negative side, however, Disney this ain't. Truly family-friendly this ain't. There is gratuitous cursing where it's not necessary, and gratuitous sexuality where it's not necessary, too. Gratuitous sex in a Christmas movie, with Saint Nick as the central character?!? Yep. True, the skimpy bimbos scampering through the beach scene are glued onto bad guys, but writers and directors can easily portray brainless babes without having to bare their behinds. Artless. What were they trying to do, throw tastelessness in to draw in the fabled 'young adult male' audience? Sour grapes aside, the side character developments of Krampus (sp?), Gryla, and Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans' character) are gratifying. I really would like to give this a four- or five-star review, but the unnecessary language and sex mean I just can't. Too bad. Better luck next time--and I'll be taking my kids, and my money, elsewhere until then. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
