Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk In spite of otherwise flat-looking film-making, the action choreography of Road House 2.0 is thoroughly enjoyable. Rated: 3/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder Road House is an entertaining action remake of the 1989 original, which replicates that film’s dumb and over-the-top spirit with extra brawn that doesn’t make it smarter, but keeps it at a consistently mindless piece of trash that’s fun to watch. Rated: 3/5 Aug 5, 2024 Full Review Pete Vonder Haar Houston Press Brandt clearly has access to money and his old man owns the cops, so plant some drugs or other incriminating evidence in Frankie's office. Do that, and a mostly naked Conor MacGregor doesn't even need to get involved. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Abe Friedtanzer We Live Entertainment Clocking in at just shy of two hours, it’s at its best when it leans into the comedy of its narrative and stops short of aiming to beat all the bad guys, and a few good guys along with them, to a bloody pulp. Jack P What a sad world we live in. We are resorting to casting really really really bad actors who can sell movies now. Connor McGregor was a wooden, smiley idiot in this. I love Jake G but these decisions just ruin movies. The VFX artists needs suing - there’s no excuse for it to be that bad in 2024. Had potential but ruined by decisions based on profitability. “They’re gonna ruin rock ‘n’ roll and strangle everything we love about it” Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Kauã M A good film to watch on a Sunday afternoon with your father, it has its problems of logic, cohesion, sometimes even direction, but it is very entertaining in what it sets out to do. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Iacob N Action packed and sort of funny, this new Road House will make you forget your worries for a little while. Although it will most definitely not win any awards, it's worth a quick watch, if you're into people punching eachother. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Blu B It's Fine but I just am wondering...why was this made? Let's be clear the original isn't exactly peak cinema or anything but it was dumb over the top 80's excess fun. And this is basically the original with all the excess stripped away and is just dumb and mindless and suprisngly boring at points. Nothing at all is broken about it. The setting is nice, Jake is ok enough and some of the fight scenes especially the bar fight are kind of cool and fun. But it jst doesn't have anything that really stands out about it or does anything better than the original. So I struggle to find a reason why this exists. The music isn't anywhere as catchy and is a weird mismatch or Religious, Rock, generic and other stuff that just never melds at all. McGregor is....something I guess....I don't know what to call it but it isn't acting. It's along the lines of Russell Crowe in Virtuosity or Dennis Hopper in Super Mario Bros. Memorable for all the wrong reasons. Everyone else is SOOOOOO forgettable. The bar owner is so boring, the villian is so forgettable as well. Structurally speaking this has all the flaws the first one has. It feels like the bar plot is forgotten about for insane ridiculus real estate tycoon plot that results in a over the top ridiculous melee at the end. Jake feels like he's sleepwalking through the performance half the time and I can't tell if he doesn't care or is mixing up being Mr. Cool vs not giving a crap. The effects are alright and the direction really isn't anything special. The lighting is dull, basic camerawork outside of the fight scenes, and nothing else particulary memorable. I don't understand why they didn't try to fix the problems the original had rather than just strip away everything that makes the original fun and entertaining. It gets so boring at points in the middle also. Skip This. It never gets the testosterone flowing like the first does. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Dennis F Anybody that gave this movie a 3/5 is braindead this movie was horrible acting was horrendous fight scenes werent even the slightest bit good plot was also trash too much hype and a super mid movie pretty much the ben simmons of movies Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review SABER P I feel it's one time watch . Action and fight scenes are cool. Connor mcgregor can't act but his action is cool . Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
