Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk In spite of otherwise flat-looking film-making, the action choreography of Road House 2.0 is thoroughly enjoyable. Rated: 3/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder Road House is an entertaining action remake of the 1989 original, which replicates that film’s dumb and over-the-top spirit with extra brawn that doesn’t make it smarter, but keeps it at a consistently mindless piece of trash that’s fun to watch. Rated: 3/5 Aug 5, 2024 Full Review Pete Vonder Haar Houston Press Brandt clearly has access to money and his old man owns the cops, so plant some drugs or other incriminating evidence in Frankie's office. Do that, and a mostly naked Conor MacGregor doesn't even need to get involved. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Abe Friedtanzer We Live Entertainment Clocking in at just shy of two hours, it’s at its best when it leans into the comedy of its narrative and stops short of aiming to beat all the bad guys, and a few good guys along with them, to a bloody pulp. Rated: 6/10 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Peter V No, I like Jake Gyllenhaai, but mistake to make this movie. The original Roadhouse I find clearly better! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Alyxia E Superb casting, acting, writing, setting, and weaving of comedic elements throughout with marvelous pacing. Finally saw Swayze as Dalton (GenX from late 60s but never got around to it before), and it made me come back and watch this Dalton again. Loved this film both times. Few films are worth watching more than once (imo), let alone within about a year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Siemen S This is what i see as entertainment. Just a fun, cool looking fight movie with a pretty good story behind it. Connor McGregor wasn't the best choice but i can see why they casted him. Also i never watched the original so don't know if that would change my opinion on this movie but i would say it's a fun watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/15/25 Full Review william s The movie is totally stupid. But luckily it seems fully aware of how stupid it is, and just tries to be fun. At that, I would say it mostly succeeds. A random highlight is Conor McGregor's absolutely unhinged and bizarre performance. I have no idea how much was on purpose, but he just wanders around playing himself, smiling like a mental patient and talking like he's one punch away from brain damage. But god help me, I think it totally works. So yeah, not a masterpiece. But a perfect Friday night, Pizza and drinks kind of movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Audience Member This really is the perfect bro film. BRAWNY - ENTERTAINING - SOLID - SIMPLE Honestly Road House is just so much fun, in the same way that Deadpool & Wolverine is fun. Graphic action. Muscle. Fists. Brawn. Blood. I never saw the original Road House, but this is watertight. Clean plot, not trying to be anything than what it is. It actually just gets better as the story goes on. That's cinema. Gyllenhaal is freaking sick. The muscle he packed on for this role is incredible and his commitment to fight choreography makes him believable without question. He makes Dalton's character development look effortless and real, taking us from the slick, careless, cool, closed off Dalton, to the open, wounded, but also completely unhinged Dalton. A performance worthy of recognition. This is definitely a guys movie. Loved every minute of it. And isn't that what film is all about? Creating a story and filling it with real, grounded characters to bring the audience into an experience? Road House does exactly that. It never got a theatrical release thanks to Amazon Prime, but it should have. It felt like it belonged in a movie theater with a full audience. It seems like a simple film... and it is. Just... as it is. Nothing extra. Just... a good movie. And I would totally watch this again. This one is going on the 'favorites' list. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Kevin P Forget the negative reviews, this is a modern day Spaghetti Western and should be a massive hit. Not to be taken as seriously as it seems, with funny and memorable characters on both sides. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
