Kate Muir Times (UK) Directed by David Leveaux, this film of the stage show is clunky, with sudden close-ups that seem out of place. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review Cath Clarke Time Out Shakespeare wrote Juliet as 13, Romeo a little older. But surely not as old as Orlando Bloom, 36, when he made his Broadway debut in the role last year? Rated: 2/5 Apr 1, 2014 Full Review Helen O'Hara Empire Magazine The thoughtful translation from the Broadway boards to the cinema screen and well-chosen leads makes this for a better than average adaptation. Rated: 4/5 Mar 31, 2014 Full Review Siobhan Synnot Scotsman Competent rather than vivid or compelling. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2014 Full Review James Mottram Total Film OK, it's not Baz Luhrmann-inventive, but Bloom's playful Romeo and Condola Rashad's sweetly virginal Juliet are beautiful to watch. Rated: 3/5 Apr 3, 2014 Full Review Katherine Monk Canada.com The director does a good job finding the shallow notes of youth and fleshing some humour from these old bones, but the burning love nut never gets roasted to perfection. Maria L. P As a high school teacher, this adaptation is current and an excellent resource for students or anyone examining this iconic Shakespearean play. Filmed as a live, continuous stage production, the ensemble cast and stage staff do an exceptional job of capturing a true theatrical experience. Highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/23 Full Review Angie B I wanted to see this for three reasons; Live Broadway, Christian Camargo, and Shakespeare. I loved the new spins they added, some of it didn't make sense but I'm ok with that. (Capulets were African American, Montagues were white.) I'm not a big Orlando Bloom fan, but he was great. The fan girls in the audience were annoying, but eh... Camargo of course stole the show. Rashad was beautiful, sweet, and wasn't upstaged by Bloom in the slightest - effortlessly. Unfortunately, I don't see any Broadway so I'm not familiar with her, but she's quite talented. If you are a fan of Shakespeare, Christian Camargo, any of the actors, or live acting - this is a must watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/16 Full Review Katie P I was really lucky to see this in August 2013 and as a huge Shakespeare buff, I thought David Leveaux did the play justice. Both Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad's acting was superb, especially during the intimate scens together on the balcony. The simplicity of the set did not distract me from the plot line. I was also lucky enough to get to meet Orlando afterwards and he was a complete gentleman and thanked me for my praise of the production, and also thanked me for reminding him of home with my British accent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/15 Full Review Yehudis K I've seen it twice on Broadway. I love the fact that the show is timeless, like Shakespeare. There's a motorcycle but the wall of love and no guns. I love that it's a black family rivaled up against a white family, although that is not the reason for the feud. I like how it's adapted to make the lovers older, more intelligent. It's worthy of being released in DVD for the general public, but those who do not see it live miss the ultimate theater experience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/14 Full Review Lisa R Saw it in person! It was great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/14 Full Review Darwin P Good acting, specially from Orlando, and interesting modern take, but other than that, the production wasn't that interesting.
