Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay), desperate to provide for his young family, and Liam (Callum Turner), a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera and constructing all the sound in post, Mark Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Jenkin conducts a cinematic séance, conjuring a portal into another world that forces us to confront the past and our relationship to it.

I’m lackadaisical about wherever the story intended to leave me, and unsure of its ruminations on whether the needs of the many outweigh those of the few. But I admire the way “Rose of Nevada” tells its story. Sometimes, my admiration is enough. Go to Full Review

The result is a film that is haunting and singular – a furnace-blast of the past reshaped and refashioned for our modern times. All aboard. Go to Full Review

As a story of time and tide waiting for no man, “Rose of Nevada” is haunting, bittersweet, and a little scary. As a filmed object, it’s even more fascinating. Go to Full Review

Despite all rather fussy visual detailing and narrative portent, the director hasn’t provided much suspense or atmosphere, making this a draggier cipher than his prior ones. Go to Full Review

Mr Hollywood Jul 9 The visuals help bring us into the story. The 16mm look works here. A film about time and place that evokes the past look of films and tv specials, to tell the story of time gone and returned. See more Mike W @mikewebb95 20h The latest from Mark Jenkin is a psychological fever dream of two fishermen transported back in time, uncertain of being reliable or not for the common good. Superb turns from George MacKay and Callum Turner, and stylistically well-made from its glorious 16mm cinematography, score, and sound design (all done by Jenkin himself). However, its slow pace throughout its almost 2-hour runtime won't sit well with some. Nevertheless, it's a gripping little British indie to check out at your local arthouse cinema. See more Cory S @RT17999302 4d Very difficult to follow. It lacks necessary cues that would help the viewer understand what’s happening. For example, there’s nothing that indicates the young woman in the beginning is the little girl in later scenes. Perhaps if her mother looked older in the beginning that might have been enough. I actually thought, at first, that one man had gone back in time and one had gone forward. Not the case. Plus the fishing scenes become quite boring after the first few. See more Bill A @Slash1964 Jul 7 great scenery, but story and character development was disappointingly simple. left feeling short changed.... See more Ari J @AriLovesMovies Jul 7 Really interesting film. That’s a big compliment from me because so many new films are a retread of something else. I do recommend a watch (in theater if possible, because the cinematography is lovely and a big screen will show that off). I don’t want to say much about the plot, because for this film it’s better going in cold. It’s set in modern times, about people living in a seaside village in Cornwall. I felt the beginning was more deliberate than it needed to be, but OTOH it did give us a chance to figure out the players. Mostly, I was engrossed & entertained throughout. My one real complaint was the ending, which I felt was rushed and didn’t give you time to sit with it. It was also a bit unclear to my companion. I thought it would have been improved by just a couple more lines of dialogue. I had a real urge to replay the final 5 minutes just to be sure I got it right. Mostly a great film experience though. Give “Rose of Nevada” a whirl! I don’t think you’ll regret it. See more Edith G @RT39873252 Jun 29 It was not captivating. The only thing that was captivating was George and Callum sexy selves. I am going to watch it again, not because it was good but because I am trying to figure out what imagery Mark Jenkin used in order to intuitively tell the story. He could have just told the story. I like the concept of the story regardless. See more Read all reviews
