Paul Attanasio Washington Post "Runaway Train" isn't just bad -- it's bodaciously bad, grotesquely overblown, lurid in its emotion, big ideas on its brain. Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Wrenchingly intense and brutally powerful, Andrei Konchalovsky's film rates as a most exciting action epic and is fundamentally serious enough to work strongly on numerous levels. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Somehow one leaves aside the blatant implausibilities, the coincidences, even Eric Roberts, and takes great pleasure in a breakneck ride to the end of the line. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a periodically effective yet predominantly tedious misfire that squanders a seemingly foolproof setup. Blu B A Classic Action Thriller. The action scenes and stuntwork is really good. Nothing beats just doing it. It doens't have much in the way of character development at first but makes up for it with banter between the two along the way. It cuts a lot between the conductors and the train but in general it all follows a logical and easy to follow flow. Really good pacing too. your on the edge of your seat wondering whats gonna happen next. Acting and music are good too though it can be a little hard to like anyone here besides De Mornay. Roberts and Voight aren't bad together but they don't have the best chemistry in the world. But it's made up for with great direction, thrills, awesome stunts, and a very satisfying but unique ending that's very unorthadox especially for a 80's action flick. Anyone who is a fan of thrillers, action flicks, the director, or any actors in this should give this a watch. This should get more recognition than it has. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Audience Member All these actors must have went to the same school, the school of overacting! The strange part is I enjoy all these actors in their other movie roles. Just two years earlier in Risky Business Rebecca was fantastic but she was like in a high school play in this movie. Jon and Eric were atrocious, it was painful. On top of this it was a thin plot, horrible special effects, I could go on.... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
