Barry Hertz Globe and Mail Aug 13
A harrowing tour through the side of the war that Putin would surely prefer to be buried. Go to Full Review
Stephen Silver The SS Ben Hecht Aug 14
While not a cinematic masterpiece like '20 Days in Mariupol,' the film is also not, contrary to popular belief, pro-Putin propaganda. (National Security Journal) Go to Full Review

It’s an un-winnable situation for Trofimova... [T]he hardest of Russian sympathizers will complain that these soldiers are ungrateful and resentful, and all critics of Putin’s war won’t be able to look past the narrow viewpoint. Go to Full Review
William Schwartz Book & Film Globe 11/05/2024
A statement about generally sad soldiers desperate for something to believe in, and at other times desperate for an injury bad enough they’ll get to go back home. Go to Full Review
Pat Mullen POV Magazine 09/18/2024
Observes an awakening as some soldiers, and the families who grieve them, ask questions that are absent from the barracks in the early sees. Go to Full Review

Atrocities aren’t just accusations; they are well-documented events. And giving herself the apolitical task of humanizing the ordinary soldier, Trofimova seems unaware that being apolitical isn’t an option in a time of war. Go to Full Review

martin c @Martinwtf Jan 4 Beautiful, notwithstanding the subject matter. Like another review said, a lot to process for the viewer. Shame the BBC won't show it. See more YouDocFilms @DocDocDoc Dec 8 You can't get this film out of your head for days. It's totally not what you'd expect it to be. It just hits you, and you want to stay silent and wrap your head around what you just saw and felt. The access is insane, the cinematography is amazing. Trofimova made history. I don't think I remember a doc where a documentary filmmaker lived with an army unit without permission for 7 months and got to tell that story. It's not just "embedding", it's beyond that. The Ukrainian outrage was overblown, radical and scary. But the film deserves to be shared far and wide! See more Thomas S Oct 1 “Russians at War” (2024) is probably the movie Putin would most like to see buried deep underground. Forget any notions of patriotic pride, forget the myths about a heroic Russian army advancing in Ukraine — what we see here is the grim reality: a poorly equipped force, made up of men and women often only in it for the money, many of whom barely conceal their low-brow cynicism. Understanding Russian adds another layer, as many of them can hardly get through a sentence without swearing, making you understand how poorly educated they are. It’s enlightening, brutal, and strips away any illusion about what this war really looks like from the inside. See more Read all reviews
