Critics Consensus

A middling drama overshadowed by tragic circumstances, Rust boasts a handsome look but doesn't bring much distinctive flavor to the Western genre.

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) The plot, co-written by Souza and Baldwin, toggles soap-operatically... It’s methodically told, but often ravishingly captured. Rated: 3/5 Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) What a strange, gloomy and deeply beautiful film this is. Rated: 3/5 Jun 24, 2025 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker There’s little about “Rust,” despite the unique horror of its production, to distinguish it, in form or style, from other fiction features. May 21, 2025 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) A mind-numbingly dull script and zombie crawl pacing hinder the otherwise familiar spaghetti western homage Rust, its capable cast hobbled by banality, doomed to be forever eclipsed by the accidental death of Halyna Hutchins. Rated: 2/5 Jul 2, 2025 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …there’s cruel irony in that Rust will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, but this harsh, unsparing film itself will presumably allow the creative team behind it to move on, and its very existence might allow those who can’t to rest in peace… Rated: 4/5 Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine As a film, Rust is decent, with some notable moments and others that are less successful. Paul S Ive seen the word mediocre used to describe the picture. Its not one Id use. Travis Fimmel (Mr. Lang) and Josh Hopkins (Wood) stand out in an already very good ensemble. Its wonderful to see a very mannered Frances Fisher once again in distress regarding one of her offspring. Nice settings and production design. Lovely score. And yes many shots are a painful reminder that well not see Hutchinsons lending on a new film again. The family relation between Rust, Mrs. Bassett, her sister et al. was a little hard for me to follow. But theres family trauma poignance here regardless. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review John H After acknowledging the tragic production of this film, there is a good movie here with fine acting and an interesting plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Mitch G Beautiful and thoughtful and thought proviking Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review robyn We liked the movie. Its was a typical western.
