What to Know

Critics Consensus

An old-fashioned spookfest, this Salem's Lot won't be the definitive adaptation of Stephen King's famed vampire tale but it makes for a passable reintroduction to a new generation.

Jacob Oller AV Club Salem’s Lot rises after years in the dark, a vampire tale with no heart and no stakes. Rated: D+ Oct 25, 2024 Full Review Chris Hewitt (UK) Empire Magazine By no means the disaster many might have expected following its years-long delay. You’ll like it. Not a lot, but you’ll like it. Rated: 3/5 Oct 15, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) No underlying meaning, no knotty themes to unpick. For audiences who have come to expect a little more intellectual bite from their vampire flicks, this is pallid, bloodless stuff. Rated: 2/5 Oct 14, 2024 Full Review Rebecca Sayce The People's Movies Despite all of its promise, Salem’s Lot is a shell of King’s acclaimed novel, encapsulating none of the terror or devastation of the vampire tale and instead falling flat on every level. Rated: 2/5 Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Jeremy Aspinall Radio Times Dauberman retains the book's 1970s milieu yet does little to flesh out the characters or build any palpable tension before revealing the chilling evil about to suck the life from the community. Rated: 2/5 Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof This new adaptation [of Stephen King’s novel] is imperfect, incomplete, but more than consistent with the original work and the tradition of vampire cinema it inspired…[Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Jan 6, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael P Removing the gothic charm and high stakes—Fear is not existent and creepy, rugged small town charm doesn’t exist. Removing these important elements removes the beauty and charm of the story of ‘Salem’s Lot. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Celia M Tuned in with anticipation but turned it off after 35 minutes. Scarier things in my son’s bedroom! This film fell flat and did not do King justice imo. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Alvina R I absolutely loved this version of Stephen King 's Salem's Lot! From the very beginning music ; Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot, it brought me back to 1974, twelve years old and reading Kings book. With my young impressionable mind and curiosity I was glued to that book and read it over and over again. Pullman, (Ben) was great , convincing, without over acting. All the actors were great, and honestly invested into thier role. Books and film are never identical but this movie was a fantastic thrill, and pretty close to the book. I was especially grateful that there wasnt excess gore and blood. We don't all appreciate gross violence and terror, our imagination can do the rest. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Curtis L I've read the book a few times. Yes, it misses some of the plot points, but if you're wanting a spooky vampire movie this is worth a watch. I don't understand the bad reviews, I found it perfectly enjoyable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/25 Full Review stephen b Seems to miss out on a lot of the details but converting the book to a two hour movie. It makes up for it by making the big moments count, pulling off the scary scenes quite well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review K T When a movie is as maligned as this one was with years-long setbacks, you anticipate that it will be terrible and this was not terrible, but not much more than that. I did actively laugh at the absurd morgue scene, which I felt was well-executed. Pullman does the best he can with what he's given, but it's not much. B-rate horror wrapped around one of King's weaker works is worth watching if you're interested, but not worth seeking out. It's particularly hard given how many good King adaptations have come out recently that really make this one worse by comparison. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
