Virgo V Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island (Miyamoto Musashi Kanketsuhen: Kettō Ganryūjima) is a 1956 Japanese film directed and written by Hiroshi Inagaki. Shot in Eastmancolor, it is the third and final film of Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy. The film is adapted from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, originally released as a serial in the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, between 1935 and 1939. The novel is loosely based on the life of the famous Japanese swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. The preceding two parts of the trilogy are Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954) and Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955). It stars Toshiro Mifune and Kōji Tsuruta. It was distributed and produced by Toho Company, Limited. Vision wrote: “in the large city of Edo in Japan, Sasaki kills multiple men like a coward in the street. Sasaki and Miyamoto eventually meet one another and agree to a fight. Miyamoto decides to delay the fight for a year. The strategy of a true Ronin. This is perfectly showcased in the tavern scene with the flies and the bums. Miyamoto plans his attacks with the paddy field-style advantage and the breaking of dawn. Sasaki is no match for him on the water's edge when the sun rises. Breathtaking and tactical! Miyamoto Musashi comes out on top as always. Toshiro Mifune showcases his qualities for the last time as the legendary Ronin. Three fries for acting, direction and screenwriting.” Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review Johnathon W Superb conclusion to the "Samurai Trilogy" that completes the story of Musashi Miyamoto. Toshiro Mifune remains superb as Musashi, now at peace with his life as a samurai, even choosing to live life a farmer over fighting duels, even when destiny calls. The filmmakers make the most complete film to date, resolving all the major storylines while delivering some epic sword battles. As a whole, a great watch for samurai movie fans. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Audience Member I have seen Toshiro Mifune in many amazing Kurosawa movies, so expectations were already very high when I started watching the first Samurai movie. The trilogy has captured the evolution of a Samurai and a human being brilliantly. Adored this trilogy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
