What to Know

Critics Consensus

Playing Jack Frost as an evil cross between Liza Minnelli and Liberace, Martin Short is a welcome presence, but this tired series continues drawing from its bag of bland gags and dumb slapstick.

Frost turns the occasion into a swag-saturated consumer orgy, which the film condemns even as it hams up product placement for Red Bull. Go to Full Review

Christmas cheer is in short supply in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, a feeble festive farce that's more no-no-no than ho-ho-ho. Go to Full Review

I'm not going to be the movie critic who gives Santa Claus a bad review. Not me. It's not up to the first two, but it's fine for kids, and Short is terrific. Go to Full Review

Ciaran S 2d A 3rd installment of The Santa Clause franchise that becomes less and less engaging and more and more boring as it progresses. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Dec 2 The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause arrives as the third installment in the Tim Allen–led holiday franchise, but unlike its predecessors, this chapter struggles to maintain the charm, wit, and warm magic that defined the series. The film leans heavily into a new snow-globe-driven premise that never feels fully realized, and the screenplay suffers for it. Instead of expanding the mythology or deepening the world of the North Pole in an organic way, the script delivers a scattered, bland narrative that rarely captures the holiday wonder the earlier films achieved so naturally. Tim Allen remains a bright spot in his return as Scott Calvin, and the returning cast continues to feel comfortable and familiar in their roles. However, the story around them is noticeably weaker this time. The screenplay fails to create the emotional or comedic balance that grounded the first two films, opting instead for a more conventional fantasy plot that never quite clicks. The heart and humor that once defined this franchise take a back seat to a louder, less cohesive approach. Martin Short’s performance as Jack Frost is perhaps the film’s biggest swing, and also its biggest contradiction. Short brings undeniable energy, and when his scenes land, they genuinely work — but the character is often written so broadly, and performed so aggressively, that the charm quickly becomes grating. It’s clear Jack Frost was meant to be a playful villain opposite Santa, but the film leans too hard into the caricature, losing the subtlety that made previous antagonistic moments in the franchise far more effective. The decision to build the story around a proper villain ultimately feels misguided. Santa Claus doesn’t need a traditional adversary; the charm of the earlier films came from internal struggles — balancing family, responsibility, and identity — not from high-concept magical battles. By focusing so much on conflict with Jack Frost, the film sidelines the natural holiday themes that made the franchise special, leaving the emotional core thin and unfocused. The direction also seems uncertain, as though the filmmakers weren’t sure how to recapture the spirit of the original while introducing new elements. Scenes move briskly but without purpose, and the North Pole — once vibrant and imaginative — feels more like a backdrop than a living world. The film tries to juggle whimsy, chaos, and family sincerity all at once, but rarely does any of it land with the intended impact. Despite its flaws, The Santa Clause 3 remains watchable for fans of the franchise. It’s a light, harmless holiday film with moments of fun and creativity, even if it never reaches the heights of its predecessors. And while it brings the trilogy to a definitive close — one that arguably should have been the franchise’s final bow before the eventual series — it’s still an entertaining enough addition for viewers looking to complete the journey with Scott Calvin. Martin Short is great and Tim Allen, yet again, gives a star studded performance (see my review of Christmas with the Kranks (CWTK)). I’m a 38 year old adult, so you know trust me on this one. WATCH IT!!!! YOU’LL WATCH IT YEAR ROUND TOO!!!!!!! See more Cade H. @cholton Jun 28 Can’t imagine it getting much better than this for a third movie about Santa. This is the only “The Santa Clause” movie to really feature a main antagonist, which is nice as it shakes up the flow of this movie compared to the two previous installments. See more Dec 24 Disappointed the number 1 elf is gone and not even a mention of it in the film. Had to look up the issue. I enjoyed the 3rd installment focused on Santa struggling with family during the holidays mixed with a quick fix from the evil Jack Frost. See more Read all reviews
