Fred Lutz Toledo Blade Though it is obviously not a "family movie," and though it has some obvious flaws... Scorpio Rising does have much to recommend itself. Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com [VIDEO ESSAY] Evocatively transgressive and subversively poetic, "Scorpio Rising" is a cinematic rebel yell against the fiercely anti-gay hypocrisies of American culture that still dog society in the 21st century. PridePosterStudios Too much Nazi. Provocative for the sake of it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Audience Member In terms of visual art this is a must watch, thoroughly enjoyed the biker aesthetic done right as in 2021 that whole niche can feel worn out and corny. It’s as authentic as can be and the soundtrack is AMAZING! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/21 Full Review William L The changing social nature of America in the '60s is displayed by Kenneth Anger as a strange instersection of culture, counterculture, and counter-counterculture. An interesting depiction of self-perception, as the essentially wordless protagonist is exposed to and incorporates various, often conflicting, aspects of personality and preference. Particularly evocative in its treatment of sexuality, documenting the evolution of society's treatment of masculinity from the safe harbors of Christian conservatism, to the rebellious outsider view of James Dean and Co., which is subsequently hypersexualized, commercialized, and presented as a social counterweight to emerging homosexuality movements before the counterweight slips into outright fascist, neo-Nazi territory where the hypermasculine is worshiped without realizing the overlap with homosexuality. A great soundtrack solidifies Scorpio Rising as a touchstone of American underground film and an incredible depiction of midcentury social shifts. (4/5) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/21 Full Review s r 1001 movies to see before you die. I expect this was on the list because of its use of pop music to express a film without musicians playing in it. The biker side of things then juxtaposed with Jesus was odd and I can see why it is / was offensive. Regardless, this was interesting and a little disturbing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review delysid d weird film but i kind of enjoyed it, im not sure what it's for, at least its not too long Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/07/19 Full Review Audience Member Mr. Anger is the master of turning images and soundtracks into evocatively sacrilegious poetry, but with Scorpio Rising, a collage of the biker subculture, Nazi paraphernalia, and homoerotic undertones, might be his most intriguing work.
