Critics Consensus

There are far worse family viewing options, but given the talent assembled, Secret Headquarters is a disappointingly bland and muddled action movie.

Tomris Laffly AV Club Despite its vintage Spielbergian vibes, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s family-friendly escapade doesn’t bother with essential storytelling devices like world-building, emotional climaxes, or even basic character development. Rated: D+ Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday There's probably enough going on in "Secret Headquarters" for some young audiences to have a good time, but parents, please: Have your kids' best interests at heart and steer them elsewhere. Rated: 1/4 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) It’s lighthearted, formulaic, and cute — your kids will like it and you can look up from the book you’re reading during the dialogue scenes. Rated: 2/4 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Rick Bentley KGET-TV (Bakersfield, CA) The film has a few interesting moments but Wilson’s laid back style coupled with a weak performance by Michael Pena as the major nemesis leaves this tale in a state of blah. Rated: C Aug 9, 2023 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound Some will hate it while others will enjoy it for what it is. That is key here – enjoy it for what it is. It was never aiming to be a blockbuster. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 28, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The film could use a little more Wilson and a lot less Pena. Audience Member This movie was great. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Josh H Where is all this hate coming from? I loved this movie! The action was fun to watch and the characters were funny, great chemistry between the cast! 😊 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Kyle M A derivative outing that adds little to the genre, amid attempted original circumstantial prompt with expected comedically advantageous antics which honestly we don't see often. But it was frivolously directed under aimless repetition of unjustifiably prolonging indecision towards cheesy ridiculing. It does attract with a nice cast providing suitable dynamics, certain few at expected/experienced charisma, then secondary consideration over its directors attempting to branch out their directorial horizon. Overall, it lands near proficiency at minimal satisfaction without impressing much. (B-) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review Hudson B I don't understand these other people! This movie is good! The comedy is ACTUALLY funny and it's combat near the end reminds me of a MCU battle! Also this is WAY better than Netflix's woke bullcrap, "Thunder Force"! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/29/23 Full Review Sarah D It's a kids world. I think it was age appropriate, funny, and looked great. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review Steven S I love Owen Wilson but he played such a small role. I didn't like Mr. Peña's role. Props to the diversity coordinator for the movie. They made sure there wasn't a scene which didn't include a black person. And they pushed hard to show interracial relationships in the movie as Disney has been doing for 20 years. Glad to see white people marginalized like colored folks have been for countless years. Soon I hope they make movies with token white people and have a majority of non whites leading. I should give this movie a higher rating for checking all the racial boxes: Hispanic, Asian, white(they suck), black and more black. Acting sucked but what do you want when you select actors by the color of their skin. I hope I don't get on a plane when they start choosing pilots by the color of their skin and not their skill level….which should be starting soon in the liberal cities. Again the movie sucked, plot sucked, acting sucked, the diversity was super awesome….all appropriate race boxes checked with an extra dose of black actors and their jungle music.
