Audience Member after Italian rip off, we've got a Turkish one. no comments :) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member 'Seytan' was a Turkish based remake, or re-imagining of 'The Exorcist'. For a low budget remake, it was actually pretty good, but for a horror movie, or a movie in general is kind of crappy. It just seems a bit unnecessary, I mean...One whole year after 'The Exorcist' ? Really? Anyways, a bit about the movie. -'Seytan' basically follows the exact same plot line as 'The Exorcist' except most Americanized themes of 'The Exorcist' have been replaced with Turkish values. For instance, the priests are Rabi's, the Bible is the Holy Quran and instead of Regan, its a possessed Turkish girl named Gul. Most of the scenes were remade word for word with slight variations, but all of the famous, well known scenes from 'The Exorcist' are all here (except the crab walk). It is even edited the same and follows the same story flow. The relic found in the desert is kind of cheesier looking, but the Pazuzu statue that is found out in the desert in the middle east is way more sinister and dragon like, it actually looks really cool. The scene where her head rotates all the way around looked good in 'Seytan' but it still wreaked of cheese. I guess even in 'The Exorcist' the head rotation looks a bit fake, because it is just something surreal. It would look fake if it happened. -Overall, 'Seytan' was an interesting take on the same story, but it just was not on the same haunting, spiritual scale as 'The Exorcist'. It was very interesting and entertaining, but it wasn't as rich and dark as 'The Exorcist'. The obviously lower budget just ended up making it much like many other demon or possession films. This version just did not stand out. It proves why one movie had the kind of impact and following that it did, simply because more work and effort was put into that film as where a very low budget and minimal effort seemed to be used here with 'Seytan'. It actually was frightening at times, and it was strange, this movie actually even used 'Tubular Bells' as it's haunting, devilish theme song also! It had the right idea, but to release this movie so shortly after 'The Exorcist' was just a bad idea. Not only would it be declared as a rip-off or bite, but it will always live in the dark, dark shadow of 'The Exorcist'. I understand the want to adapt the story to other cultures and religions, but it just isn't going to have the same kind of impact unless a lot of care is put into the final production. All i know is that Satan, or Seytan, or Bezelbub or whoever, seems to like to terrorize upper-class families usually with the same fashion: possess the young daughter, bring hell to earth for a short time, kill a priest, exit out of the young girl and enter into another priest. This same evil pattern can be found in both movies. *Halloween Horror-Fest 2010 continues....* Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Turkish remakes should be judged solely as authentic comedies because they can't really be measured better (haha) or worse than the American movies they're ripping off. Most of the time you can only be amused by the unintentional slapstick bits and mistranslated subtitles. I mean what's more funny than those two things? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member F- (but as a comedy it gets an A+) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review bill t A Turkish remake of the Exorcist pretty much sums it up, if you know what you're in for when I say "Turkish Remake". For whatever reason, the Turks see it that any popular movie is completely remade using Turkish actors. This is why you see this, Star Wars and Spiderman, to give several examples, of the genre. Seytan is pretty good, the girl in this is just a wee bit annoying, the mother is even more so, but the doctors and psychologists trying to piece together the girl's puzzle is interesting. I didn't really like, contrary to the other reviewer, the way the subtitles poked fun at the movie. Just leave the yocks to us please!
