Audience Member As far as I'm concerned, the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes ever, on the small or big screens. It's obvious that Rupert Everett delved into the books because his portrayal also happens to be the closest to the literary Holmes. Flawed, self-absorbed and a hopeless addict, Everett treats us to a still-infallible yet completely-human Holmes. If only his name became synonymous with theatrical Holmes instead of the abominable Basil Rathbone. Sigh. The mystery is a good one. I saw one reviewer say it was "predictable". If true, then I'm a idiot because it wasn't the slightest bit predictable to me. I saw the twist at about the same time Holmes did, so that was pretty satisfying. Acting was superb all around. Set design and production were fantastic. If you truly love "whodunnits" then there's not much here not to love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member not my fave holmes, basil rathbone Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Rupert Everett plays Holmes so languid...almost limp. Lacks charisma, sorry. Quite disappointing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A faithful rendering of the traditional Holmes. While difficult to follow, it really does not matter, Sherlock is on the case. A serial killer stalking the teen-aged daughters of the aristocracy brings Sherlock Holmes out of his drug-filled semi-retirement. The first time I have ever seen Holmes sub-contract out his vital work to someone else. He gives an assignment to a female very well acquainted to psycoanylitic work. The interview is an astounding piece of drama. Watson seeks help from the retired and bored Holmes, who determines that the victims are well-born ladies, not prostitutes. Evidence found include a thumbprint, a pair of ladies' dancing shoes, broken glass, a strong smell of chloroform, and a silk stocking removed from a victim's gullet. It seems the killer has a foot fetish."---wikipedia The new Sherlock 2004 SEE the entire film here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHgIxgCNYeU Holmes, left and Watson, right REVIEWS by those like us: 80% Quite good. Michael Fassbender is awesome, and Rupert Everet makes a great Holmes. 70% Predictable but it had a more modern, rather than stuffy, feel and that needs to be more prevalent in period drama, especially of the mystery variety.... Robert Bianco of USA Today remarked, "Everett [Sherlock]sticks close enough to the outline created by Arthur Conan Doyle to be recognizably Sherlockian, and yet he deviates enough to create an amusing character all his own." 3 "This is a departure," said Rebecca Eaton, executive producer for WGBH in Boston, which produced the show with the BBC and Tiger Aspect Productions. "That's what we say at PBS when we don't know what is going to happen. We could be arrested by the Conan Doyle police - or at least severely reprimanded - because we are departing from the canon." Everett's a little too good-looking to be the detective, playing him with a sense of lushness not normally associated with the good Holmes.
