When a number of attractive women are found dead and with fingers missing, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) investigate. Though evidence points to a psychotic killer, Holmes begins to believe that there's more to the case than initially meets the eye, a notion that leads him to uncover the involvement of his archenemy, Professor Moriarty (Henry Daniell). Phil Hall Film Threat Superior entry in the delightful Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce series. Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2010 Full Review John A. Nesbit Old School Reviews No one does Holmes like Basil, and this ranks among the stronger of the series Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2007 Full Review Michael W. Phillips, Jr. Goatdog's Movies It's one of the best in the series, partly because it strays from formula and partly because it summons some genuine mystery. Josh G The sharpest technical wise of all the Sherlock films, but the story can be a bit silly the whole hypnotism thing, enjoyable and well acted but silly at times. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Rating: 6/10. 66/100 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review Jelisije J To me this is the worst of the 1939 Sherlock Holmes film series. Its a slow and I do mean a very slow murder mystery movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/21/23 Full Review Liam D An underrated entry in Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes franchise Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/22 Full Review robert p Another great adventure by Sherlock Holes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review joe m Enjoyable if rather perfunctory Sherlock Holmes film. Unlike the stories and films based on Conan Doyles originals, there is no real mystery here as to who is doing the murders (a gang led by Moriarty and a lovely female mesmeric) or how Holmes is going to crack the case. Yet, not bad for 60+ minutes. Much enhanced by the lovely Hillary Brooke. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
