Leslie Felperin Guardian Despite a few modish touches, this feels fundamentally very old-school, and not necessarily in a good way, right down to the repeated shots of people running away from fireballs in the background. Rated: 2/5 Jun 10, 2021 Full Review Anna Smith Deadline Hollywood Daily One plot line veers towards fantastical science fiction, but it's presented entirely seriously. It's an overwrought concept, conspicuously patched up by flashbacks and expositional dialogue. Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times The film's corkscrew plot becomes a little weighed down by all the flashback narrative reveals, but the crazier the revelations, the more fun it becomes, before it powers full steam towards a thrilling finale. Rated: 3/5 Apr 4, 2024 Full Review William Schwartz SupChina Yau opens the movie with a glorious and hilariously pointless explosion of Hong Kong International Airport, mostly just to prove that he can put it to film. Mar 25, 2022 Full Review Alejandro Turdó Hoy Sale Cine The contrived plot is filled with twists and turns, some of them even hitting too close to soap opera territory. But still, Shock Wave 2 becomes an outstanding balancing act, with equal parts of Action, Drama and Thriller. Rated: 8/10 Nov 3, 2021 Full Review Peter Martin ScreenAnarchy From its opening moments, director Herman Yau's thriller snaps, crackles, and pops, immediately dialing the temperature up to the boiling point and beyond. dick n Out of 2hours there was probably 15minutes of enjoyment. Will probably have forgotten the entire movie in 2 days. Nota: 6,5 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Starring and produced by award-winning actor Andy Lau (House of Flying Daggers, Infernal Affairs, God of Gamblers), this film finds the actor playing former bomb disposal officer, Poon Shing-Fung. Despite suffering from amnesia and the loss of his leg in an explosion five years ago, he still becomes the top suspect of a terrorist attack called Vendetta and must also evade the police and stop a terrorist group from destroying Hong Kong. That said, this movie is a new story and has nothing to do with the first movie, so you can come in fresh. Directed and written by Herman Yau (the first Shock Wave, Ip Man: The Final Fight), this film debuted at the top of the global box office, grossing $63.9 million in its opening weekend. Beyond Lau, one reason is the action choreography by Li Chung-Chi, the same man who is famous for The Legend of the Drunken Master, Twin Dragons and Rumble in the Bronx. Also known as Shock Wave: Hong Kong Destruction, this movie starts with Hong Kong Airport exploding and only gets more action-packed as it moves to action scene to action scene. Lau is in his sixties but can still get you cheering for his high energy work, much less doing so much of it with just one leg (thanks to some solid CGI). If you miss the old days of Hong Kong action, you may want to give this a try. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review harris r A non-stop action blockbuster production! Director Herman Yau presented one heck of an outstanding production with excellent directing and cinematography. The writing had a few plot and technical issues, and for the most part was predictable. I feel some filler scenes could've been cut down or out to make the 120 min runtime closer to 100, based on the amount of substance in the storyline. The performances were all on point and convincing, and the fights scenes were perfectly choreographed. The V/SFX were actually quite impressive for the most part, with just a few sloppy CGI scenes. I found the score to be a little cheesy and overbearing, especially in the beginning. Otherwise, it was a fun thrill ride, worth seeing if you're into this type of action films. A well deserved 8/10 from me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jack h Good movie but BAD awful plot. There is absolutely no way a bomb defuser cannot work when the person is fully capable of doing the job.... The lack of logic ruined good acting from all star roles. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sequel movie title but has nothing to do with the first episode. Just like the English title: Shock Wave - although in Chinese it stands for "bomb defusing expert" - is deafening and good for a nice Dolby theater with popcorn and coke especially during Chinese New Year. The plot tries to mingle things together of an shock-wave side-effected amnesia policeman being heroic and explaining his love affection while not dropping overly squeezed Hollywood style man-made visual effects. Just like an over-hard baked pie - not too tasty but edible. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
