Yates Martin (Edward G. Robinson) and his wife, Sarah (Aline MacMahon), are struggling to make ends meet as owners of a grocery store in late 19th-century Colorado. When Martin's silver mine strikes it rich, he begins to live the high life, moving to a huge mansion and running for public office. His grandiose ways alienate his wife, however, so he takes up with Lily (Bebe Daniels). Then Martin begins dreaming of running for national office, unaware that his fate will change once again.
