Critics Consensus

Enlightening, uplifting, and compelling, Sisters in Law takes an unflinching -- and often humorous -- look at efforts to effect legal progress for Muslim women in Cameroon.

Liam Lacey Globe and Mail Grim but inspirational. Rated: 3/4 May 14, 2010 Full Review Neil Smith BBC.com Where it triumphs, though, is in sending a message of hope from a continent too often associated with tragedy and despair. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2006 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Guardian Some cases are harrowing, but the film is never grim. The formidable Ngassa shows such resilience, kindness and common sense that the effect is oddly uplifting. Rated: 4/5 Aug 12, 2006 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Phoenix [A] skilled, moving, and funny look at two woman judges pushing a progressive agenda in a Cameroon courthouse. Rated: 3/4 Apr 23, 2009 Full Review Maria Garcia Film Journal International Possesses a disarming veracity which is not easily dismissed. Mar 1, 2007 Full Review Jules Brenner Cinema Signals The human compassion shown by these judges, advocates and arbitrators, mixed with humor in the face of sin and brutality, is an impressive achievement for an ethnic oligarchy. Audience Member This is one of those rare documentaries in which the film maker is not evident and the subjects of the film tell their story. It is compelling, touching and powerful. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Amazing documentary. I got so invested in the lives of the women and children these two ladies helped. Gives me hope that individuals who do the right thing can make a positive difference in society. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Koskettava dokkari, joka kertoo afrikkalaisista naisista jotka haluaa taistella kyläläisten oikeuden puolesta. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member reminds me of some of the strong women I knew in Venda Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Powerful, complex, funny, immensely tragic, honest & hopeful all at the same time. Made me cry and I don't cry easily. Just watch it, forget about your expectations or whatever...it's much better than what it sounds like. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
