Critics Consensus

Forgetting to give Russell Crowe a compelling mystery to solve, Sleeping Dogs lies down rather than stands on its own.

Stephen Romei The Australian The murder mystery Sleeping Dogs is Russell Crowe's best film for a while. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It’s an engrossing plunge into the film noir tradition and it’s a pleasure to watch Crowe embody the very fallible Freeman. Rated: 4/5 Aug 1, 2024 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian This is certainly not a crime thriller in the dourly realistic “cold case” vein; it is outrageously over-the-top at all times, with crazy and almost dreamlike convolutions of plot, and yet its silliness is enjoyably dramatised. Rated: 3/5 Jun 18, 2024 Full Review John McDonald Australian Financial Review There is a mystery to be solved, and a parallel mystery in Roy’s mind as to how much of the murder he remembers. Little by little, the two strands converge, not without further mayhem. Oct 8, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider Let Sleeping Dogs lie. Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Archika Khurana The Times of India Crowe’s performance is a standout, adding depth and grounding to an otherwise erratic film. His portrayal of Freeman injects moments of authenticity into the narrative, making Sleeping Dogs engaging despite its flaws. Rated: 3/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Glenn S Amazes me that people expect action from Russel, often is in purely drama movies! Worth a watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Omar G Sleeping Dogs (2024), rating 6/10 stars. Silly resolution with a non-original twist, in Tenebrae (1982) the protagonist was the killer. Crowe shined as the detective Bud White of L. A. Confidential (1997) and The Nice Guys (2016) the latter was a remake of The Last Boy Scout (1991). It's about memories that bother the mind, how memory is really reliable, its was as you remember it or it's imagined. Alzheimer's is a reward for not remenbering that his perverse wife cheated on him. It seems that Russell Crowe make fun of the cuckolds, he had an affair with Meg Ryan as I recall. Now Crowe can play Santa Clause. Maybe Roy Freeman tried to commit suicide when he had the car accident and the police fired him or Elizabeth Westlake tried to kill him. In the end it turn out that Roy will blow his own brains ot with his gun. In her thirties years Karen Gillan was still beautiful woman, who plays Laura Baines/Elizabeth Westlake a attractive multilingual maneater who has fun talking in several languages about Sergei Rachmaninoff, The Mathematics of Crystallography and neuroscience. She is the manipulative missy who doesn't want to her hands dirty. Richard Finn in his book exaggerates his relationship with Laura. Tommy Flanagan, the guy who was Maximo's assistant in Gladiator (2000), is at his best roll in this film. Islam is a religion for prisoners according to the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Terry T This movie will keep you thinking. Maybe it moves a little slow for some viewers, but keeps you guessing about the characters. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Quinta K Very good movie with a compelling story. The various characters are well portrayed. You get to know the characters quickly without unnecessary long background information. The different suspects makes the movie very engaging. Also, Russell Crowe once again delivered an outstanding acting performance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Michael L Fans of vintage film noir will be rewarded for their patience with the pace of this film. Crowe's detective muddles through his own mind as well as through cold clues, Some clarity emerges, his mind warms in response to a clinical trial. The plot resolution is artful. The professional critics who panned this might have wished for comic book figures to root for or graphic novel bluntness accented with CGI. Audiences liked it almost two to one relative to pro critics. Butter some popcorn and see it for yourself. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Steve D Great premise but it unravels.
