Critics Consensus

Winsor McCay's classic Nemo comics are fertile ground for the right filmmaker, but Slumberland forsakes the spirit of the strips in favor of senseless spectacle.

Brian Lowry CNN.com The realm of dreams is described as “a world with no consequence,” but as constructed, that comes in a movie with no clear creative compass, proving more mystifying than magical. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com The biggest problem with Slumberland is its utter innocuousness. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 18, 2022 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal Ms. Barkley comes across as a kid rather than a studio creation. Mr. Momoa gives the kind of unhinged performance of which few would have thought him capable. His prancing about at moments of joy are, in fact, joyous. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews An unimaginative adaptation of an imaginative 20th-century comic strip. Rated: C+ Jan 24, 2023 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope What the actors, music and visual creative teams have here done is create a magical world that relates to the real world as well. It goes beyond the coming of age genre, dealing with parenthood and retaining the wonder of childhood as an adult. Rated: A Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Charles Hartford But Why Tho? A Geek Community Slumberland delivers a fantastic journey that both entertains and delights while taking a serious and heartfelt approach to its themes of loss, trauma, and moving on with life. Edwige D The use of dreams to deal with grief is not original, but it is workinv really well in slumbeland. Eventhough its quite predictable, i liked it a lot. The cinematography is gorgeous and speaks of a whimsical childlike sense of wonder and fantasy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review 10Eye'Sea D Excellent movie very deep and profound even though it leaves room for children! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Dakota A Pretty good movie. Jason Momoa rocked in his roll. It is a little on the childish side, but it is a kids movie. Gives similar vibes to BFG Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Will B A little silly themed, changing from dreamworld to reality. Didn't really know where the film was going. One of them in which once you've seen it, you probably wouldn't watch again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Christian G Charming film. Give it a go. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Remigiusz L Kind of baisic writing. Honestly everything was basic, interesting premise, but executed poorly.
