Critics Consensus

Small-town gossip and a battle of the sexes should really add up to more than Something to Talk About, especially with this much talent before the camera.

Sheila Johnston Independent (UK) Contains the occasional barb -- mainly from Kyra Sedgwick, who steals the film as Roberts' tart-tongued sister. But Roberts herself is a drip, and it's a dull story. Mar 29, 2024 Full Review Derek Malcolm Guardian The film, though not unentertaining, keeps on backtracking, sentimentalising and not quite getting to grips with its subject matter. Mar 29, 2024 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek The humanity is spread around with a quirky, generous hand, reason enough to distinguish this quiet, low-tech comedy in a season of big-bang juvenilia. Feb 16, 2018 Full Review Mike Davies Birmingham Post Unfortunately, with the exception of Sedgwick's spirited monopoly on one-liners, all this happens not only with unrelating meandering mundanity and a drab performance from Roberts, but also with the addition of a [pointless] subplot. Mar 29, 2024 Full Review Graham Young Birmingham Mail You'll be talking about this film all right when you come out -- about how numbingly dreadful it is. Rated: 0/4 Mar 28, 2024 Full Review Quentin Falk Sunday Mirror (UK) [Julia Roberts and Gena Rowlands] are treated disgracefully by the men in their lives, yet they still seem curiously forgiving. Mind you, it is set in the Deep South, which always appears stuck in a time warp. Rated: 2/5 Mar 28, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Mike P Bad movie about gossip and affairs in a small town; where the central scene has Julia confronting all the women in the town square about Dennis Quaid; her unfaithful husband... But it's unconvincing and done with lackluster acting. Everyone involved here has done much better than this. If you want to see Julia in a similar soap opera-ish scenario where she's going off on disloyal family members and quashing cruel gossip you should see her in August Osage County which covers a lot of the same territory but it's much better than this. MUCH better! I mean this comes of like some cheap episode of One Life to Live or something by comparison. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Audience Member Genuinely lovable movie considering its about inferdelity it has fun moments but Julia Roberts is exceptionally good as the woman scorned Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review steve d you won't even remember it let alone talk about it later. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Basically, the message is: your spouse cheated? Get mad, then get over it. The end. What a waste of a great performance by Kyra Sedgwick. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Feel good ending after a couple of rich brats finally go through a rough patch as adults. Excellent locations & props - and a quality cast that knows how to deliver a line all wrapped up in a Goldie Hawn production. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member It's an affair to remember when the aftermath was exaggerated and created pathos along the way. But the light side of that is the nice performances of the cast to make things resolved towards the smart-moved outcome after some surprising moments with warmth.
