Critics Consensus

Overly frantic, painfully unfunny, and sorely missing the presence of Jim Carrey.

Joshua M That the heck I’m a watching Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Audience Member This has absolutely nothing in common with the first film, aside from the concept of a mask that can transform people. Absolute garbage, put it directly in the bin 🗑️ Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Elaina R I saw this movie on tiktok people Said it is shitty so I decided to watch it it was decent expect it was more of a joke then a sequel and the hair looked like plastic but it was okay I would recommend watching it if u want to watch a cheap copy of the mask Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review SkyRo P Son of the Mask, the much-anticipated second installment in the Mask franchise, unfortunately falls flat and fails to capture the magic of the original. Instead of building on the quirky charm and humor we loved in the first film, this sequel takes a baffling turn into Greek mythology, with the God Loki sent by Zeus to retrieve the mask he supposedly created. This shift from the original’s playful tone to a supernatural god-and-goddess storyline feels forced and downright silly. Jamie Kennedy as the new mask wearer was a huge disappointment. His portrayal lacked the energy and comedic brilliance Jim Carrey brought to the role. The CGI effects on his face looked plastic and lifeless, stripping away any genuine expression or humor. Even his hair looked fake, unlike Jim Carrey’s wild and dynamic look that made the mask so iconic. And then there’s the bizarre storyline of a baby born with the mask’s powers — a concept so strange and off-putting that it felt more like a joke than a clever plot device. Overall, Son of the Mask is a complete misfire. It not only fails to honor the original film’s spirit but actively diminishes the franchise’s potential. For fans of the first Mask, this sequel is a disappointing and regrettable detour that I would definitely advise skipping.
