BadNews R Every once in a while, you stumble across a film from the late ’70s that makes you stop and say, “What in the world did I just watch?” For me, Spaced Out (1979) is one of those films. It’s marketed as a quirky sci-fi comedy, but in reality, it’s nothing more than a flimsy excuse to string together a series of awkward, forced sexual encounters under the guise of an “outer space adventure.” The supposed premise—humans abducted by female aliens—is drowned out almost immediately by the film’s obsession with sexual gags and crass innuendos. The encounters aren’t just over-the-top, they’re unsettling by today’s standards, often crossing into scenarios that feel more exploitative than comedic. Back in the late ’70s, this type of content may have slid by as “just a movie,” but in today’s world, it doesn’t hold up at all. And honestly, even for its time, it feels cheap and thoughtless rather than playful or inventive. The direction is practically non-existent. Scenes stumble from one to the next with no real structure, no storytelling purpose, and no payoff. The acting is equally atrocious—flat deliveries, overacting, and performances so awkward that they only make the already cringeworthy script feel even worse. Instead of being a campy cult gem like some ’70s oddities, it collapses under its own weight, with each scene feeling more painful to sit through than the last. And let’s be clear: this isn’t one of those “so bad it’s good” experiences. There’s no hidden charm here, no quirky performances to laugh at, no bizarre effects to admire. It’s just bad—badly written, badly acted, badly directed, and ultimately a waste of time. Simply put, Spaced Out is a relic of its era that fails both as a comedy and as a sci-fi film. It’s not fun, it’s not clever, and it’s definitely not worth revisiting. If you’re looking for something from this period that’s cheesy but entertaining, there are dozens of other titles out there. This one? Skip it. It's a pretty stupid movie, but it is slightly funny once in a while. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Although I loved seeing Glory Annen in this movie, she was cute as always, she doesn't have a very big part. The story was a bit silly, and the characters were stupid, but it is a normal sex comedy so you can't expect much when they try to put that into space.
