Audience Member Nice little indie on the Icelandic frontier 3.4 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/22 Full Review Audience Member Fast forwarded the last painful thirty minutes. Not sure what the movie message was but it doesn't matter just plain boring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member The 2018 film SPELL is pretty low key but manages to be about as prosaic and naturalistic as possible while also being fantastic. It uses its small budget creatively to make the film look natural rather than cheap. The story stays interesting with every scene as well, almost by using criticism of American culture to expect something grand and overblown, instead of just enjoying nature and history. Plus, I loved how they used the followers of Loftur sparingly so we know what they're all about without have to overexplain them. This isn't as precisely controlled of a narrative as 2016's A Dark Song and doesn't have as spectacular of an ending but it does manage to make magic intriguing as that film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Max S It's cool to see Barak Hardley in a more serious lead role., considering all I've ever seen him in are supporting comedic roles. This movie surpassed my expectations. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/11/20 Full Review ryan s I love this flick. Weird and funny, beautifully shot and genuinely moving. Highly recommend! Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Genre fans may be disappointed that "Spell" is more of an artful character sketch than a supernatural thriller. But by focusing on despair and regret, the movie is still pretty haunting. Nov 3, 2019 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Actor-writer [Barak] Hardley gives Benny a likeably ramshackle personality as a cheerful dork who resists pretty much everything that comes his way, but gives in eventually. Rated: 4/5 Nov 4, 2019 Full Review Adam Keller Film Threat ...what remains is something made with love and talent, but not enough vision to make a lasting impression. Rated: 6/10 Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation A American adrift in Iceland dramedy that's better as dark comedy than as a grieving man's dark night of the soul.
