Critics Consensus

A visually stunning film that may be too predictable and politically correct for adults, but should serve children well.

When the movie wants to look majestic, the colors truly emanate, but when it wants to look grim, it can look very grim and moody; I was breath taken. Go to Full Review

K G @KatyG-S 2d This movie is a big ride on a stallion. From the start, I was stunned by the 3D backgrounds/settings, which looked like paintings, just like a classic Disney movie (but this is not a Disney movie). It even comes with shots with more dimension that it's traditional soulful animation. Any movie like this would come with emotional/heartfelt moments: horses should not always be used as equipment & the man, who meets Spirit, cares for him & is selfless to let him be free & with the one he loves. It may not be "HTTYD" but... One More breathtaking moment is the music: the music/songs by Bryan Adams took me away, just like Phil Collins with Disney's "Tarzan". Soon, we are at its negatives... The lyrics to the songs do seem generic & the screenplay is formulaic: 1 scene has a happy ending & another moment comes - it could have a TV series instead! Nevertheless, it is nice & some things: the horses do not speak yet Spirit verbally narrates this (do I like Matt Damon?). See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Mar 9 Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a charming animated movie that stands out for its beautiful visuals and heartfelt storytelling. The film follows the journey of a wild horse fighting to protect his freedom, and it tells that story with a unique style that relies heavily on emotion and visual storytelling rather than constant dialogue. Because of this approach, the movie feels different from many other animated films and connects with audiences in a more sincere way. The animation is one of the strongest parts of the film. The landscapes, movement, and overall design create a world that feels vibrant and alive, helping the audience stay engaged with the journey. Even without a traditional comedic tone, the story still manages to feel entertaining and emotionally rewarding. Overall, the film is creative, engaging, and easy to recommend. It may not always get the attention it deserves, but it remains a memorable animated film that is definitely worth watching. Watching it now, 15 years later, I undercovered all the underlying themes about the history of America - colonisation, slavery and exploitation and sense of belonging. Spirit is a masterpiece. A touching story set in beautiful scenes and accompanied by a banging soundtrack - a must watch for people of all ages. It's wholesome, with good animation and an interesting narrative, and not weighed down with crude humor like 90% of their movies. See more Read all reviews
