What to Know

Critics Consensus

A visually stunning film that may be too predictable and politically correct for adults, but should serve children well.

Jun 11, 2008 Full Review Michael Booth Denver Post Spirit is smarter than your average cartoon because it doesn't try to joke around with a host of annoying talking animals. Cameron L This is what Disney should be doing right now. Beautiful animation, no talking animals (only Matt Damon narrating the story), And just wonderful moments in the film Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Jay W Movies that are either really good or really bad are easy to write reviews for. On the flip side, it is hard to get passionate over a film that is just OK. This movie falls solidly in the middle and it is hard to make too much of a comment about it. "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" is a 2002 animated film by Dreamworks. This was back when Dreamworks animated films were both traditional 2D style and computer-generated style. But after 5 massive flops, Dreamworks dropped their 2D films and went all in on their 3D department. I enjoy this animation style and really miss them being widely released. I will say that the animation is the best part of this movie. The music is also very good. The delivery of this story can't be faulted. It is just a really well polished plank of wood. But at the end of the day, it is still just a plank of wood. Matt Damon is not a great voice actor. Although I haven't been able to find any official word on the matter. Watching the movie, I can't help but think adding a voice actor was a late in the game decision. The movie would have worked just fine having the visuals do the story telling. But it becomes a lot easier to sell if it has a voice narrating the inner thoughts of the main character. And it wouldn't hurt the marketing if Jason Bourne happened to be the voice. It sure is a movie about a horse alright. It's not that is doing anything all that wrong, it just isn't doing much right. Some call this a classic, but to that, I say nay. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Robby B For how low my expectations were, it was really amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Incrível Trilha sonora e arte perfeita O enredo se encaixa a história é muito emocionante, melhor filme de animação ja feito Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Audience Member One of my old time favorite when I was a little girl. This movie still has a special place in my heart. It made me love the horses even more. The OST of the movie and Bryan Adams singing in english AND in French was an absolute banger. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Audience Member I dare say that adults can appreciate this movie more than children. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
