Critics Consensus

Although not terrible, the sluggishly paced Insurrection plays like an extended episode of the TV series.

Jake Cole Slant Magazine Many Star Trek movies are likened to super-sized TV episodes, but 1996’s Star Trek: Insurrection feels more like three or four completely unrelated episodes mashed together. Apr 5, 2023 Full Review Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Rated: A Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader The extravagant makeup and special effects are actually unobtrusive because they're demanded by the pleasantly formulaic story, whose conflicts--and broad, innocuous political allegory -- justify the heartwarming resolution. Krzysztof K This is a great rendition of the Star Trek: The Next Generation genre! There are mysteries that uncover during the movie, great acting, characters true to their original .... character, some good humor, philosophical questions, and quite enjoyable action scenes (which is NOT a necessity in the TNG series, but a good add-on). I have logged in on RT just to write this review, as I do not understand how this movie can be lowly reviewed by anyone who enjoyed watching TNG, and I was really close to skipping it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Michael F I agree with another reviewer. Next to First Contact, this is also my second favorite of the next generation cast movies. Playful, covers a serious topic, and enjoyable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Sean E Next to first contact, this is my second favorite of the next generation cast movies. I’m sad that it didn’t get the same praise that first contact got. I thought the story was great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Blu B Totally Passable. Nothing Broken in the slightest. Very ok all around. The story has great commentary and ideas that have there moments with certain character drama moments. Usually they involve Stewart whose ok but has some good moments here. With that said, the reason those ideas don't really flourish is because the execution of everything is done like a TV Special Movie. This has the cinematography of a TV show with a decent budget. This forgets it's a movie and not a extension of the TV series which is almost TOO faithful here. The look, sound, acting, editing, and pacing are all done like the show. Also, this really isn't deeply character driven. The plot line of Data at the start feels completely forgotten about, the romance with Stewart is a after thought, and nothing character driven in general has any depth. Again feeling like a TV episode with just different subplots centered around the main one that don't add much or aren't explored. I mean if your a huge fan of the show than you'll probably be right at home with this. Most could probably skip this though. Defintely one of the best odd numbered entries though for what it's worth. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Steven S I’m amazed this received a mediocre review. I think it is one of the best Star Trek movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/24 Full Review A S What happened? Went from one of the best Star Trek films, to one of the worst. Nothing can help with the mediocre storyline and poor writing.
