Critics Consensus

While not without its fair share of thrills, The Langoliers suffers from a meandering pace and dubious characterizations.

As the scriptwriter for "The Langoliers," [Tom] Holland has strung together some of the clunkiest dialogue you're ever likely to hear. As the director he has encouraged his mediocre cast to overact shamelessly. Go to Full Review

Is it the post-apocalypse? Is it another dimension? Or is it a half-decent episode of The Twilight Zone stretched into a miniseries? Whatever the case, expect cries of "For God's sake get on with it!" to reverberate around your living room. Go to Full Review

You spend hours in the company of cardboard characters, under the doughy direction of Tom Holland, waiting for something scary to happen, and at long last your payoff is a couple of minutes of cheesy special effects. Anyone's idea of a good time? Go to Full Review

The two-parter takes a while to gather momentum, but the second installment is a tense, eerie barn-burner. Go to Full Review

It would take a great dramatic performance by [Bronson] Pinchot for the film to have any chance of working. He doesn't deliver. Go to Full Review

The cast, on the whole, creates believable characters in an unbelievable situation. Go to Full Review

Dallas H @FozzieMcFly May 4 It has been thirty years since I watched this made-for-television movie. I think it was broadcast on the ABC network, which also aired the made-for-television adaptation of The Shining and The Stand back in the '90s, and then Rose Red after the turn of the century. I clearly remember watching The Langoliers on TV when it aired. Even then, I knew the CGI special effects were extremely cheesy, as if they were on a very tight budget. It was not until I rewatched it just now that I realized it is horrendously bad. They should have opted for alternatives other than computer-generated imagery. Stop-motion and model-making would have been a more realistic alternative. Definitely give this one a watch if you have 3+ hours. See more Freyja H @RT23356143 Sep 3 While slow paced the movie is very thought provoking and motivational. The slow pace is necessary for the value of time to be conveyed. See more Troy R @Grim16 Jul 26 A Classic childhood film for me. I remember watching it all the time as a child. Re-watched it with a remastered version and I have to say the idea that old movies can be remastered by AI was the most impressive thing from the experience. I would say the Pilot, the Novelist, Nick, and Toomy were the most notable characters in the story. Rest were a bit flat and kind of just there to be sterotypes. Of course Stephen King can't resist giving some human super human abilities so unfortunately there is that. But otherwise a true classic with some decent suspense. The thing I enjoyed the most on rewatch and I think as a kid was the indepth scifi elements the movie uses. Time travel, government experiments, the alternative take on time, the weird physics/sounds/smells in the world they enter, etc. That being said 3hrs is a rough run time and there is certainly a lot that could be done without to make a proper remake. That being said I still enjoyed it. See more nick s @Nick_S 04/10/2025 Poor script, awful acting and crumby storyline. You might want to fast-forward to the final ten minutes and check out the embarrassing pacman special effects. Then you'll appreciate it ain't worth the wait. This student quality film has no redeeming features. See more Read all reviews
