Critics Consensus

While not without its fair share of thrills, The Langoliers suffers from a meandering pace and dubious characterizations.

John Voorhees Seattle Times As the scriptwriter for "The Langoliers," [Tom] Holland has strung together some of the clunkiest dialogue you're ever likely to hear. As the director he has encouraged his mediocre cast to overact shamelessly. Jan 15, 2020 Full Review William Thomas Empire Magazine Is it the post-apocalypse? Is it another dimension? Or is it a half-decent episode of The Twilight Zone stretched into a miniseries? Whatever the case, expect cries of "For God's sake get on with it!" to reverberate around your living room. Rated: 3/5 Jan 15, 2020 Full Review John Carman San Francisco Chronicle You spend hours in the company of cardboard characters, under the doughy direction of Tom Holland, waiting for something scary to happen, and at long last your payoff is a couple of minutes of cheesy special effects. Anyone's idea of a good time? Jan 15, 2020 Full Review Tom Jicha South Florida Sun-Sentinel The two-parter takes a while to gather momentum, but the second installment is a tense, eerie barn-burner. Jan 15, 2020 Full Review David Zurawik Baltimore Sun It would take a great dramatic performance by [Bronson] Pinchot for the film to have any chance of working. He doesn't deliver. Freyja H While slow paced the movie is very thought provoking and motivational. The slow pace is necessary for the value of time to be conveyed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/03/25 Full Review Troy R A Classic childhood film for me. I remember watching it all the time as a child. Re-watched it with a remastered version and I have to say the idea that old movies can be remastered by AI was the most impressive thing from the experience. I would say the Pilot, the Novelist, Nick, and Toomy were the most notable characters in the story. Rest were a bit flat and kind of just there to be sterotypes. Of course Stephen King can't resist giving some human super human abilities so unfortunately there is that. But otherwise a true classic with some decent suspense. The thing I enjoyed the most on rewatch and I think as a kid was the indepth scifi elements the movie uses. Time travel, government experiments, the alternative take on time, the weird physics/sounds/smells in the world they enter, etc. That being said 3hrs is a rough run time and there is certainly a lot that could be done without to make a proper remake. That being said I still enjoyed it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review nick s Poor script, awful acting and crumby storyline. You might want to fast-forward to the final ten minutes and check out the embarrassing pacman special effects. Then you'll appreciate it ain't worth the wait. This student quality film has no redeeming features. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Nic D I loved this movie. Perhaps it's because of the personal context - watching it in bed with my lady friend who I adore - but I don't think that's all it is, as I have no problem turning off anything that is junk while in the same situation. (For example, I found "Tommyknockers" to be absurd and couldn't get thru half of it). This movie however, was great. I have even watched it over again a few times. The characters are all very likeable (except for the one yor supposed to hate (even he you feel sympathy for - which is a sign of the more-empathetic times, I believe); the actors, aside from the pilot who is somewhat of a movie star, are all what you would call B-rated, but they did such a good job and are such an excellent piece of that period in time and of the genre that is now sadly extinct - the TV mini-series. It is a film that earnestly attempts to replicate a short book that takes on a fun/eerie topic (very Twilight Zone-y topic indeed), and in my opinion it absolutely succeeds in doing its job. Yes the FX are not good, and yes the monsters are utterly absurd - but they are based on a child's imagination - they are just as absurd and viscerally real AS a child's imaginary monster SHOULD be. I actually really really liked that the monsters which the movie built up for so long wound up being real, not just hypothetical/metaphorical. .... At any rate, I absolutely loved this movie and as far as I'm concerned it is "90's gold" (not as pure and valuable as "80's gold," of course. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review Daniel J Lots of promise in this one. It just doesn't really get developed properly. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review SICKS6SIX S stephen king wrote some real garbage and this is right at the bottom of the barrel, plus the acting is terrible, the whole film is just awful, watching adverts is better, at least they are not to long, Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
