Critics Consensus

A sobering drama that throws everything along with the kitchen sink at its doggedly determined hero, Steve's pileup of crises can strain credulity but Cillian Murphy's superb performance keeps it grounded in reality.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) [Cillian Murphy's] turmoil is magnetic, but the storytelling can be explanatory and sometimes the overt technique of Belgian director Tim Mielants (Small Things Like These) is skilful but distancing. Rated: 3/5 Oct 16, 2025 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday Most importantly, the movie approaches the stories of these people and their challenging mission with a big, open heart, with the compassion necessary to see the value in the teens' lives instead of simply sweeping them away. Rated: 3/4 Oct 7, 2025 Full Review David Fear Rolling Stone It’s handled in such a slapdash, klutzy manner, and feels so cut-rate, that you may find yourself raging alongside the movie’s youngsters. Not even Murphy can sell it. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Whang Yee Ling The Straits Times (Singapore) As fun as detention, but this classroom drama pays worthy tribute to the dedication of educators. Rated: 3/5 Oct 15, 2025 Full Review Shalini Langer The Indian Express ... a superbly acted film that is well-intentioned but also intentionless. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2025 Full Review John Stark Mac the Movie Guy Jay Lycurgo is a breath of fresh air, with a devil may care attitude, and a dangerous charisma that make him one of the years best discoveries, and one of the best performances of 2025. Ghederick Eshmont Cillian Murphy is the preeminent actor working these days & his partnership with Tim Mielants is producing some pitch black, beautiful films Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/25 Full Review David M A powerful, moving drama that follows a day in the life of Cillian Murphy's titular head teacher of last-chance reform school, as he battles to keep the school afloat alongside his fracturing mental health. The pile-up of crises in the space of one day can stretch credulity, but the performances of the boys and especially Cillian Murphy make this a minor concern. I've worked in different times and ways with boys like those portrayed in the film, and it felt real - every issue, every character, felt truthful. The ending is ultimately more uplifting and hopeful than you might expect, and it's more than worth sticking around for. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/14/25 Full Review Tyler K. I AM STEVE!!! 🗣️🔥🔥 6.9/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/25 Full Review Wayne M Steve is an intense and sobering film about young men on the edge of society. It's truthful, authentic and searing. The film is made documentary like as we follow a TV crew for a day at a school for boys with societal and behavioural problems. The film, set in the 90s, is adapted from a Max Porter novella named Shy. Shy is one of the students at the school and Steve is the headteacher. Steve is committed to the boys, but he also has his own issues with addiction. As the days go one we get to meet the boys at the school and find out their issues and troubles. There is violence and sadness and some happiness. The film is gritty and intense, with great performances from a mostly unknown cast. One known quantity is Cillian Murphy who is excellent as Steve. A thoughtful and intelligent film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Jonathan R My Mum used to work in a school like this just outside of Glasgow, for girls. This film gives an amazingly accurate portrayal of what it was like. The staff had to deal with so much but they just cared and loved. I think that’s what comes over in this movie - it is real, not made up, not giving a fake rosy glow - the staff really did love. They loved badly damaged young people. The experience left the staff with scars, some of them deep, some of the staff (not many and not my Mum) had similar coping mechanisms as a result. A lot of these places have closed now - they fell out of favour. This is maybe quite sad because I don’t think there is anything that has taken their place.
