      Critics Consensus

Stockholm can't quite do justice to its themes or the real-life events it dramatizes, but a light touch and well-chosen cast keep the end results consistently entertaining.

Audience Member A cat-and-mouse chase in 70s flair, Stockholm keeps your interest with an eccentric Ethan Hawke and legitimate anxiety inducing scenes of potential violence. I don't understand the decision to explain "Stockholm Syndrome" in the first scene. It's a popular term and concept in 2019, but I still think enough viewers would've appreciated arriving at this momentous incident and its pop-culture effect naturally. Unfortunately, the film does that thing where everyone is speaking English, but those who are supposed to be speaking a different language just speak English in that accent (here, Swedish, of course). I never understood this. Either have people speak the language where they are located or just speak in their regular accents a la The Death of Stalin. This aside, the film definitely picks up in the final third and you do care about what happens to the characters. Hawke as the rambunctious Lars Nystrom is the main attraction. His relationship with Bianca (Noomi Rapace) is the nexus of the "syndrome". In truth, it's kinda messed up, especially after she returns to her husband (Thorbjorn Harr). The story is about the relationships between the characters and those characters and the police — you pretty much forget that it's a money heist. It won't be life-altering, but it will entertain. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm trying to watch 'Stockholm' the 2018 movie, basically because I'm a big fan of Christopher Heyerdahl, who also makes a decent performance as the bank manager. But even he couldn't save this from pretentiousness, bad wigs, and awkward overacting. Also, all actors speak English only because a not very convincing Ethan Hawk isn't Swedish. Not due to language, but several of the Swedish and Norwegian actors generally show how overrated they are. Maybe it just comes down to poor direction in a hasty project based on a wild idea around an otherwise interesting event. Usually, when the movie version of a true story misfires, I go on YouTube and try to find a good documentary instead. There's isn't any about the Stockholm Syndrom, but there is a funny video by John Knows Nothing, a fine and informative summary, still with a humoristic twist, that I can recommend. Regardless, the whole story is ridiculous and hilarious, but 'Stockholm' just sucks most of the fun out of it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A really interesting story that is simply not very well executed. It didn't seem to know whether it was a dram or comedy. Was hoping for something like Dog Day Afternoon but it was more like a few actors had a free weekend and threw this together. Shame. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Stockholm Is a decent caper movie but that’s about it. As far as bank heist movies go it’s watchable and it’s a fun time but it’s not one of the best bank robbery films out there. Performances are well done and Ethan Hawke definitely shows range. I wish the ending was a little more eventful and a little more happened in the film. It’s a good but not a great bank heist film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/10/21 Full Review samuel l Somewhat enjoyable despite the ridiculous and unbelievable plot. There is no way this film is an accurate dipiction of the real events. The acting was off for several characters such as the chief of police, the introduction and ending were disappointingly vague, the handling of the hostage situation was so terrible it can't be true, there wasn't much action considering how many people were pointing guns, and the kissing was just silly. However, the cast was reasonable, Ethan Hawke and Mark Strong performed pretty well, the cinematography felt modern, and the pacing, visual effects, and soundtrack were fine. The writing let it down big time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Philip De Semlyen Time Out It's fun watching Ethan Hawke's oddball robber socking it to The Man in a wig and stick-on handlebars. Rated: 3/5 Jun 26, 2019 Full Review Ian Freer Empire Magazine The ever watchable Ethan Hawke is the best thing in this crime caper. It's uneven and lacks the power of its premise but always manages to keep your attention hostage. Rated: 3/5 Jun 26, 2019 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) From its gaudy 70s costuming to its goofy, wobbling tone, everything about this film feels uncomfortably broad. Jun 23, 2019 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace‘s undeniable chemistry is the foundation of the film, and it is also the glue that holds it together. Rated: 3/5 Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Dallas King Flick Feast It is a difficult task to produce an original twist on the genre. Which is ironic given this is the story that inspired it all. However Budreau uses the staging to create an effective sense of claustrophobia and builds the bond between captor and hostage. Rated: 3/5 Nov 10, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A fairly light indie comedy that could probably dig a little deeper into its story and characters but seems perfectly content to just have fun.
