Stolen tells the story of how women who had the misfortune to fall pregnant 'out of wedlock' were treated in an Ireland that was heavily influenced by the Catholic Church. Over 80,000 unmarried mothers were incarcerated in institutions run by nuns from 1922 to 1998. Most were cruelly separated from their babies shortly after birth. Many of the children were adopted within Ireland and abroad -- unaware of their birth story and untraceable by their mothers. Others were fostered out as cheap farm labor from the age of six, often in circumstances abysmally devoid of care and love. 9,000 babies and children died in these institutions from 1922 to 1998, a rate that, on occasion, was five times the national average infant mortality rate.

Donald Clarke Irish Times No study of outrages surrounding the mother and baby homes in Ireland can hope to be comprehensive. But Margo Harkin, a film-industry veteran who first attracted attention with Hush-a-Bye Baby in 1989, comes closer than one might have imagined possible. Rated: 5/5 Nov 3, 2023 Full Review Leslie Felperin Guardian Altogether, this is a nearly immaculate, exemplary piece of documentary film-making. Rated: 4/5 Nov 1, 2023 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Ireland’s scandalous treatment of unmarried mothers in the 20th century has fuelled several documentaries and dramas, and this film by Margo Harkin is a plain but weighty addition to the list. Rated: 4/5 Nov 6, 2023 Full Review Hilary A White Sunday Independent (Ireland) Stolen is not an easy watch but it is an essential one. It feels like a definitive declaration of the events using the best qualities of the cinematic medium. Rated: 5/5 Nov 3, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
