What to Know

Critics Consensus

Stone boasts a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, and Milla Jovovich, and it features strong dialogue, but it's ultimately undone by its heavy-handed symbolism and overabundant plot twists.

Nev Pierce Empire Magazine Great performances from the cast in this engrossing drama. Rated: 4/5 Mar 16, 2011 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News A disconcerting and challenging film. It leaves you wondering. How cool is that? Rated: B Oct 22, 2010 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader You can feel the movie's gears grinding throughout, first in the rote suspense mechanics and later in the ham-fisted religiosity (conveyed through an endless soundtrack of evangelistic talk radio). Oct 22, 2010 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Neither the all-around strong performances nor craftsmanship behind the camera can make the script by Junebug scribe Angus MacLachlan any more coherent. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 31, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) The merciful thing to do is blame erroneous Karma and allow Stone to sink. Iamwhoi M I don't know how much they had to pay Milla Jovovich to do sex scenes with De Niro; but whatever she got, wasn't enough. The excruciatingly long scenes made me nearly lose my lunch. That guy should've retired decades ago, when people still thought he had talent. De Niro is the weak link in this movie. It would be much better with some other actor in the part. Unfortunately, the old fart IS in it, so watching it is a CHORE. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Jordan Y They want you to think deep but deliver a shallow performance. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Adam B I really enjoyed watching Stone. It's long so I watched in two sittings, but Everytime I sat down and tuned in I saw great acting with a thought provoking story. The story is deep, many references to Revelations (which is about judgment day, inter alia, in the Christian Faith). Im at an age to appreciate movies like this, not when I'm twenty something, but more for mature people who understand value in relationship, character, morals, etc cetera. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Reuben A Swirling themes bog down this movie but keep you watching because life is not so clean cut, it seems to be real and going somewhere. Good acting carries the film through to examine spiritual life of America through the lens of the criminal justice system. These four characters embody that spiritual life, all are flawed, all are searching, it seems Stone was the only one who found something he was looking for. The rest are still out there, unresolved, living. It is a deliberately disturbing film about belief and for the Mistress(Mrs.) non-belief. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review MJ W The movie just didn't seem to come together for me, and DeNiro's character came across as overacted and not believable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Nicolas P Robert De Niro's character is not believable as a retiring parole officer who is apparently, for sone odd reason, extremely naive in dealing with inmates. Acting is good, the writing is good with the exception of De Niro's character. Kind of baffling... Will pass the time, but ends rather abruptly and unresolved to some extent.
