Donnie K Ferrell flexes his movie star muscles in this quiet, poignant comedy-drama. Almost 20 years later this one still holds up well and is a secret favorite amongst writers. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Dan D Read the book before I saw this masterpiece. Queen Latifa steals this film with a stunning performance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Isabelle N The film "Stranger than Fiction" combines drama, humor, and surprising turns. The story revolves around Will Ferrell's character Harold Crick, who begins to hear a voice informing him of what's going on in his life. Harold is quite concerned about this voice since it seems like it may die soon. After that, he makes an effort to learn more about this voice and how to alter his destiny. The film does a fantastic job of letting you ponder profoundly one minute and chuckle the next. Harold hears Karen Eiffel's voice, played by Emma Thompson. She is a writer attempting to complete her work. My favorite character is Ana Pascal, a baker who initially dislikes Harold but eventually warms up to him. And there's Dustin Hoffman, who portrays a professor of literature. He advises Harold on his peculiar and fictitious dilemma and has a distinct sense of humor. The way the movie displays figures and graphics on the screen is one aspect that sets it apart from other films. Harold enjoys working with numbers, thus these images provide us an insight into his perspective. It's a distinctive element that elevates the film. The movie "Stranger than Fiction" also discusses the influence of narratives. There are stories in everything such as movies, books, and even our daily lives. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Tyler A My favorite film ever! Idk what to say other than its amazing! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review David W Stranger than Fiction delivers the alternative, touching feel that marks so many great movies from the 2000s decade. It's a romantic comedy that fans who prefer tragedy will also enjoy. I also enjoyed the underlying message that ultimately life is what you make it. It's your story and you are the protagonist, despite what the author-narrator has in mind. It's also one of my favorite Will Ferrell roles that shows his acting capabilities go well beyond the slapstick comedy he's most well known for. Props to the soundtrack, too! I would absolutely watch this again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Caroline S The movie ‘Stranger Than Fiction' tells the story of several characters, all intertwined by fate, a wristwatch, and a narrator's voice. The main character, Harold Crick, works for the IRS (Internal Revenue Service), and has a very predictable and boring life. His life is turned upside down when a voice starts narrating his every move, causing him to reevaluate everything he's used to. When searching for help, he meets new friends, a love interest, and the person who controls the strings of his life. Overall, the story is touching, imaginative and clever, and it is a reminder that life is unpredictable, short, and messy. It also breaches the thin line between fiction and reality, making them flow into each other. It makes the viewer think about mortality and immortality, and how someone's memory can be preserved forever in literature; "The hero dies, but the story lives on forever." It consists of a good balance between humorous scenes, and serious scenes, and provides us with a main character who is relatable and flawed. Harold Crick, the protagonist, struggles with life and its responsibilities, just like everyone else. He struggles with living life to the fullest, and making it "the one he's always wanted.", instead of conforming to society's view on the ‘ideal' life. This results in the movie not having a perfect, flawless hero, but instead a regular man who could very well exist in real life. Furthermore, the movie urges the viewer to focus on the smaller details, to appreciate them more, and to "remember that all these things, the nuances, the anomalies, the subtleties, which we assume only accessorize our days, are, in fact, here for a much larger and nobler cause. They are here to save our lives." However, while the story leads up to a life-changing event for Harold, the ending was a little disappointing. While some people might be glad that it ended on a positive note, others might see it as a compromise. I believe it would've been more interesting to explore a different ending, in which the original idea of the narrator, Karen Eifel, is carried through, and the viewer can watch the impact it has on the other characters.
