      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It's thoughtful and well-acted, but Submission falls frustratingly short in its attempt to offer insightful commentary through its timely premise.

Elizabeth W Great film. Funny and sad at the same time, and fantastic performance by Stanley Tucci as a careworn teacher flattered by the attention of his attractive young student. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Didn't really enjoy this one as it just seemed to drag on without any real content or climaxes along the way until the final 15 minutes of the movie when the obvious happens which we knew from the outset. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Rich S Expected more from Tucci in both choosing this character to play and in his character's choices. It's a pretty lame take on an old theme. There's nothing real bad about Submission, but nothing enjoyable about it, either. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/20 Full Review Audience Member Horrible acting, editing and plot line Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I really enjoyed Stanley Tucci's performance but was however quite disappointed by the end. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A cautionary tale that the #MeToo movement should be alert to. Guarding against sexual harassment can become over zealous. Watch with 1930's The Blue Angel. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Rex Reed Observer A seriously considered film brimming with ideas worth examining. Rated: 3/4 Mar 20, 2018 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News Tucci and Timlin are both quite good in their roles, and writer-director Richard Levine (adapting Francine Prose's 2000 novel "Blue Angel") does an excellent job of slowly escalating the pair's relationship. Rated: B- Mar 9, 2018 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Honoring the primacy of language for his characters, Levine deftly reveals the ways they wield it to seduce, attack, manipulate, repress and, occasionally, to communicate. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Daniel Howat Next Best Picture Submission keeps the audience engaged with a slight but well-told story, it just might leave you wanting a little bit more. It’s still a respectable film on its own but rarely digs deep enough into this complex issue to have anything surprising to say. Rated: 6/10 May 19, 2022 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site For its intelligence and clear-eyed approach to things, Submission is worth viewing. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Erica Ciccarone Nashville Scene Levine's script misses the opportunity to get in the ring and wrestle with the messy place occupied by consensual but regrettable sex.
