harding h If nothing else, it was funny and the cast was great Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/12/22 Full Review Audience Member It‘s so bad I wouldn‘t know where to begin or what could have made it better. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this movie! It was almost like a parody of Odd Thomas done very well. And yes, I also loved Odd Thomas. Also, Mathew Gray Gublee was fantastic and would be ideal to play Odd Thomas in a sequel (RIP the great Anton Yelchin). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Limp gags killed the comedy portion of this horror comedy, and the horror itself was neither scary or interesting. Barbara Niven did her best to save the film, while Matthew Gubler did his best to be Jim Carey. I don't know WTF Kate Dennings was doing besides looking completely ridiculous in her goth-metal vomit attire. Speaking of goth-metal, the soundtrack also sucked. Not even a cameo by John Waters could polish this turd. If you like to laugh, or be scared, or have any kind of a decent movie watching experience, then skip the hell out of this one. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Decent watch, could watch again, but can't recommend. I watched this excited to see Kat Dennings in a movie again, but she really ends up playing second fiddle to Matthew Gray Gubler who basically carries the movie. While he actually seems like a good actor and was able to add a flavor to his character that I couldn't tell that if it was just him shining through, the truth of the character or he elevated the character with a special twist, so this puts him on my to watch out for list. The story itself is really lackluster. There are a lot of familiar faces, and the minute to minute is generally pretty entertaining, but the weirdness of finding a hidden kiddie coffin and trying to lay a ghost to rest gets weird when it's stretched over a long period of time without getting intense. I'm all for different, and I can't call this bad, but there are so many other good things to watch instead. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Brian R it was a lot of fun to watch. the actors were so perfect for their roles. the casting director did great because the people portrayed the characters so well. Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times "Suburban Gothic" misses the mark, but thanks largely to its cult-worthy cast, the miss can still be fun. Jan 29, 2015 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Richard Bates Jr.'s sophomore feature is a droll horror-comedy driven by a talented cast's riffing. Jan 27, 2015 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter The movie plays quite well for a while but begins to run out of steam in its second half. Oct 13, 2014 Full Review Deirdre Crimmins Film Thrills The real joy of the film is the sharp dialogue and huge personalities in this satire of a suburban hell. Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Scott Weinberg TheHorrorShow A dry, wise-assed, and slyly appealing comedy/horror mix. Aug 23, 2015 Full Review Matt Donato We Got This Covered Suburban Gothic is a hipster's Poltergeist that boasts more of Richard Bates Jr.'s darkly comedic wit, but more importantly, it's a strong second feature that showcases one of the more vibrant up-and-coming horror filmmakers the genre has to offer.
