Wayne K Despite containing arguably the most famous catchphrase in the Dirty Harry lexicon, Sudden Impact is actually the 4th film in the series, and the only one to be directed by its grizzled star. I really enjoyed the first DH, the only one I had seen until last night. Sudden Impact comes around 12 years after the original, and its clear that Eastwood was already getting a little too seasoned to play the character, leading to some odd moments and creative decisions. The fact that he’s easily able to outfight people years younger than him and survive a beating from 3 thugs, followed by an attempted drowning makes it feel like Eastwood was pushing the character beyond his limits, and even indulging his own ego a bit. The story itself contains some hard hitting stuff, with powerful subjects matter and violence that doesn’t, ahem, pull its punches. Its not much of a mystery, as we’re given frequent flashbacks which reveal the culprits, who spend the whole film acting like everyone already knows they’re guilty anyway. It can be dull at times, and Eastwood is far too in love with helicopter establishing shots, but the story is mostly involving, and the reluctance to sugarcoat anything makes the material much more impactful. I can’t say where it ranks in the series, since this is only the second one I’ve seen, but once I’ve seen the others, I’ll know where this one fits.
